TITLE: Elementary School CounselorQUALIFICATIONS: Proper State Certification Other such qualifications as the board may deem acceptable and appropriateREPORTS TO: Superintendent of Education, Deputy Superintendent, Principal or other designated supervisorDemonstration of ProfessionalismUses correct oral and written communicationAdheres to board/school policiesAdheres to the Ethical Standards of the American Counseling Association and the American School Counselor AssociationMaintains confidentiality within ASCA GuidelinesMaintains positive atmosphere with students, teachers and communityOrganization of the Guidance ProgramPlans counseling and guidance activities for the schoolyear, showing appropriate time allocationsDemonstrates evidence of organizational skillsPublishes and distributes a calendar of events relevant to counseling and guidanceAdminstration of Guidance ProgramSchedules appointments for developmental counseling as neededProvides time for counseling self-referred, at risk students and crisis counselingConducts and interview with newly enrolled studentsConducts follow-up of newly enrolled studentsPlans and conducts group counseling and guidance activities (Pre-registration, financial aid, drug awareness, testing, etc.)Plans and conducts group counseling and guidance activities throughout the yearStudent RecordsCoordinates maintenance of student recordsCoordinates or assists with individual and/or group standardized testingReview students' progress at the end of each grading periodKeeps accurate records of entering and withdrawing students, (dates, schools...)Maintains MSIS release, request and addition of, student information in a timely mannerCompletes transcript in a timely mannerTestingFollows the direction of the State and District Test CoordinatorFollows the state and district test security planInforms parents at least one week prior to all state-mandated testingInterprets student testing information (individually/group)Identifies students with special needsGuides the analysis of student test dataInforms supervisors and district office personnel of curriculum strengths and weaknesses that are identified based on test dataIdentifies students who are at risk for failure on state required tests and guides the formation of individual intervention plans for those studentsCoordinates remediation for students who fail or are at risk of failures on state testsCourse SelectionIssues pre-registration forms for the coming school term by March 1 of each school yearCollects pre-registration forms and begins to compile data by April 1 of each school yearGives the school principal the compiled information necessary for creating the aster schedule by April 15 of each school yearConducts group information sessions on subject selectionConducts individual counseling sessions on subject selectionCommunicates with parents/guardians on student progress toward graduationAssists with education planning of students with identified needsWorks with Career/Technology/Vocational center for placement in vocational areasSpecial ServicesActs upon referrals from students, teachers, other professional staff, parents and agenciesAssists with student referrals; Serves on Student/Teacher Support TeamUtilities community resources and agencies in providing servicesAssists in appropriate placement of students with special needsProvides individual group counseling and guidance for students in course activity placementAssists in placement of students for instructi nal purposesCoordinates activities in assisting students in preparing for job placementIdentifies ELL Students (English Language Learners)Family, Home, School and Other Support ServicesWorks with family concerning home situation that relate to the student's performance and attitude toward schoolWorks with teachers, administrators and other staff regarding such issues as student attitude, progress and attendance (absenteeismWorks with attendance officer and provides necessary information in a timely mannerFollow-UpConducts follow-up of students (transfers, drop-outs, etc.)Evaluates the counseling and guidance program annuallyRevises program as neededPerforms other duties as assigned by the Principal, Assistant Principal, Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent or other designated supervisor
