Description
The Leidos Space Division, whose primary products are IR Payloads that are hosted on satellites in earth orbit, is in need of an Optical Engineer - Intern to join our San Diego-based team in the summer of 2025. This unique opportunity will allow you to participate in a space program, supporting optical system design, integration, manufacturing, and test. Selected applicants will find challenging work that prepares them for their careers in the space domain and/or with imaging systems. This internship will broaden the intern's knowledge with industry standard tools, data analysis, and provide hands-on understanding of system design, test, and operations.
Primary Responsibilities:
The Optical Engineer - Intern will work in a small team environment, supporting the manufacturing and testing of optical components / systems such as telescopes. Tasks may include optical metrology, data analysis, and optical system wavefront testing.
- Planning and execution of tasks under the guidance of one or more Optical Engineering mentors.
- Documentation of designs and corresponding analyses.
- Perform product performance testing.
- Analyze measurement data to validate system performance and present results for team review.
Basic Qualifications
- Rising senior in the field of Optical Engineering, Physics, or Astronomy from an accredited institution.
- Completion of a minimum of three optics-related courses.
- Basic knowledge of geometrical optics.
- Working knowledge of optical laboratory setups and operations.
- Must be US Citizen.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability using optical CAD (i.e., Code V, ZEMAX).
- Basic knowledge of MATLAB or other programming software.
- Basic knowledge of stray light.
