Laboratory Technician

The Laboratory Technician will complete routine analytical and laboratory testing in support of the food safety quality and operational teams. We are looking for a hardworking person who will perform routine analysis of product testing, being responsible for checking and monitoring instrumentation performance and conducting tests for which we are going to provide intermediate supervision. In this role, you will document results into databases and/or communication test results.

  • Help develop food/feed safety, quality and regulatory culture collaborating cross-functionally to build, maintain and improve an effective food safety, quality and regulatory culture. Run calibration checks, preventive maintenance tasks, and simple repair to analytical instrumentation, maintaining customer specifications books up-to-date.
  • Interpret and document results of tests into active databases and communicate results to internal customers as required.
  • Ensure compliance programs for all individual testing, which includes monitoring adherence to regulations and other procedural food safety compliance.?
  • Conduct routine quantitative and qualitative inspections and laboratory tests on raw materials, in-process and final products independently, supporting more complex trials and experiments under intermediate supervision.
  • Handle clerical, administrative, technical or customer support issues under general supervision, while escalating more complex issues to appropriate staff.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents (safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals).
  • Write routine reports and correspondence.

Job Description:
  • Work independently and as part of a team, developing, planning, and executing day-to-day lab and pilot equipment operations and maintenance as established in SOP's
  • Ability to work safely with lab equipment and chemicals
  • Provide process and sample data to sample owners in timely fashion
  • Keep clear & concise records of lab and pilot plant operations
  • Ability to work around moving, light industrial equipment and chemicals safely
  • Ability to use analytical equipment (pH/conductivity, RI, Density, UV-VIS, HPLC, GC, etc)
  • Good mechanical and electrical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
  • Some background in chemistry or chemical engineering desired
  • Some experience in refinery operations or other chemical processing operations desired but not required

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Primary responsibility for this position is to operate pilot and lab equipment to create industrial grade quality samples in a safe, timely and professional manner.
  • The technician is responsible to ensure the facility remains operational and safe.
  • The technician will also execute other administrative tasks, as assigned.

Preferred experience :
  • Hands-on processing experience running equipment as well as analytical methods. Interest and desire to interpret data and optimize the process. Previous operations experience is highly preferred
Education:
HS diploma/equivalent
Dress Code:
  • casual (i.e. jeans and t-shirt, clothing appropriate for operating equipment). Cargill requires long sleeves for some activities, but a uniform shirt will be provided for that duty.
  • Plant style PPE - Hard hat, safety glasses, steel toed boots, gloves (and sometimes extra PPE for more hazardous tasks like a chem suit). We provide all PPE needed.
Typical hours:
Monday - Friday between 6:30 am to 5:00 pm, typical 8-12 hour shifts. Night shift will be required a few days a month scheduled in advance (4:00 PM- 4:00 AM)
