Background

The External Relations Director reports to the CEO of iMMAP Inc. and is responsible for leading iMMAP Inc.'s efforts to increase its visibility, outreach, and influence globally, overseeing a global communications and outreach team, which consists of a Global Communications and Outreach Coordinator, two Digital Communications Officers, and a Communications Task Force Coordinator who liaises with communication focal points in 12-13 country offices and a part-time graphic designer (at 50%). This role focuses on deploying strategic communications to elevate the organization's profile among stakeholders, including implementing organizations, governmental bodies, academic institutions, and foundations engaged in humanitarian, development, and climate change efforts. The External Relations Director will oversee the creation and dissemination of impactful communication content and lead initiatives that amplify the organization’s outreach, presence, and education in close coordination and collaboration with the Business Development, Impact, and Partnerships Director. This position works to plan and implement outreach activities in line with the iMMAP Inc. Communications and Outreach strategy.

The External Relations Director reports directly to the CEO and must be a cooperative team player, able to work well with other senior executives (Operations Director, Business Development Impact and Partnerships Director, Strategic Planning Technology and Innovation Director, People and Culture Director, Finance Director, Country Representatives, Security, etc.) for overall iMMAP Inc. performance and success.

Description of Duties

Strategic Communications:

  • Develop and implement a communications strategy that significantly raises the organization's profile, outreach, and visibility globally.
  • Craft compelling narratives and messaging that resonate with audiences, highlighting iMMAP Inc.'s impact and expertise in the sector.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive outreach strategies that enhance iMMAP Inc.'s engagement with philanthropic foundations, private sector, and government representatives.

Media Engagement:

  • Enhance media relations strategy to secure high-level placements in print, broadcast, and online media.
  • Act as the organization's spokesperson when necessary, representing iMMAP Inc. at media events and public forums in the US and North Americas, and globally when required.
  • Spearhead the use of digital platforms, including social media and the organization’s website, to enhance online presence, outreach, and engage with key stakeholders.
  • Utilize data-driven analytics to refine digital outreach strategies, ensuring maximum reach and engagement.

Event Representation and Management:

  • Lead the planning and execution of events that position iMMAP Inc. as a leader in the humanitarian and development sectors.
  • Represent iMMAP Inc. at strategic events to enhance brand visibility, outreach, and engage with influential networks.

Public Relations and External Engagement:

  • Strengthen public relations and work in close coordination and collaboration with the Director of Business Development, Impact and Partnerships to foster robust partnerships with philanthropies, private and government representatives. Ensure alignment with our mission and enhance recognition of our impact in the sector.
  • Establish and deepen relationships with foundations and academic institutions dedicated to development and humanitarian causes, promoting collaborative opportunities.
  • Engage with government representatives to advocate for policies that support humanitarian and development information management.

Academic Partnerships:

  • Build connections with prestigious universities, research institutes, and academic entities to collaborate on innovative research and data management solutions.

Communications Leadership:

  • Lead a dynamic global communications team to project iMMAP Inc.'s mission and achievements through compelling narratives and strategic campaigns.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 20 years of progressively responsible experience in communications and outreach.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in a director-level role.
  • Proven leadership experience in strategic communications, preferably within the non-profit, governmental, or related sectors.
  • Experience in a global or international organization, preferably in the humanitarian or development sector.
  • Strong ability to craft and execute communication strategies that engage and influence a variety of stakeholders.
  • Established track record of managing media relations and corporate communications.
  • Strong understanding of social media, digital marketing, and emerging communication trends.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English (knowledge of other languages is a plus), with the ability to articulate a clear and persuasive narrative.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to drive strategic vision into tactical execution.
  • Ability to travel internationally.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and team management skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic, collaborative environment.
  • This position is a hybrid role, based in Washington D.C. and requires regular visits to the iMMAP Inc. Washington D.C. Office.
