Job Summary

  • Responsible for the planning, development, and evaluation of the pediatrics curriculum including topics, courses, and methods of instruction, which relate to pediatrics.
  • Teaches through instruction, supervision and role modeling, the skills, values and attitudes identified by the WesternU/ COMP Department of Pediatrics as necessary and appropriate to be good physicians. Teaching responsibilities may include mentoring WesternU students of all programs on clinical rotations as well as participating in the first- and second-year didactic programs, and as a lecturer or facilitator in the third- and fourth-year clinical programs as assigned at COMP / COMP -Northwest.
  • Helps to develop and participate in research projects and grant funding. Participates in development and implementation of grants by state, federal or private organizations awarded to WesternU/ COMP / COMP -Northwest.
  • Advises assigned student mentees regarding curriculum issues and graduation requirements. Serves as advisor and consultant for assigned student club and acts as liaison between administration and students on club related activities.
  • Participates in discussions and works with other departmental chairs and discipline leaders at WesternU.
  • Promotes, by example and precepting, a general atmosphere of respect for knowledge, thought, and inquiry in pediatrics within the University.
  • Contributes to the planning, development, and evaluation of courses and academic programs within the college and university.
  • Plans and manages the departmental budget, allocating funds appropriately to efficiently utilize resources. Projects future departmental budgetary needs (operational and personnel) and provides proposals with documentation during the budget planning cycle.
  • Evaluates departmental faculty and staff members according to their job descriptions and consistent with departmental, college, and university standards.
  • Provides vision and leadership in departmental strategic planning taking into consideration input by the departmental faculty (if applicable), the college administration, outside stakeholders, and national benchmarks.
  • Evaluates candidates for appointment of clinical faculty members and participates in the evaluation and development of said members, when indicated.
  • Participates in professional organizations necessary for the representation of the Department of Pediatrics at COMP / COMP -Northwest.

This is an administration position that includes a faculty appointment.

Required Qualifications

Education: Doctor of Medicine (DO) or (MD) degree. Current AOA or ABP board certification in Pediatrics.

Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in teaching and academic leadership in a medical education setting preferred.

Licensure: Unrestricted California or Oregon licensure (or eligibility for California or Oregon licensure). Unrestricted Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) certificate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Integrates pediatrics and its principles into the appropriate segments of the four-year academic curriculum at COMP / COMP -Northwest.
  • Responsible for maintaining intellectual integrity and striving for academic excellence in teaching.
  • Provides leadership and collaboration to foster an integrated approach to osteopathic medical education between COMP’s academic departments.
  • Supports faculty development within the college and department.
  • Coordinates and develops an integrated approach to osteopathic medical education between all the clinicians on WesternU’s campus.
  • Performs and coordinates the on-site evaluation of pediatrics rotations (clerkships) and submits written evaluation reports to the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs.
  • Evaluates the candidates for faculty positions in pediatrics mentoring OMS III in clinical rotations.
  • Develops and coordinates the curriculum for OMS I through IV students.
  • Conducts oneself in a professional manner so as to bring credit to the key role model position in pediatrics for our medical school and students.
  • Serves as faculty lead for the pediatrics core and elective rotations. Continues to develop and refine the goals and objectives for pediatrics rotations for the OMS III and OMS IV students.
  • Clinical teaching and precepting of students.
  • Performs other duties and projects as assigned by the Dean of COMP / COMP -Northwest.
  • Oversees delivery of Pediatrics clinical curriculum, including the content and methods of instruction, testing and remediation that relate to the pediatric course in preclinical years.
  • Serves as coordinator of the team that suggests topics, objectives, responsibilities, and methods of evaluation for pediatrics clinical experiences, including reading and research assignments.
  • Helps prepare students for Pediatric internships.

Research Activities

  • Works with students to develop research proposals including IRB applications, conducting studies, and presenting and publishing their research results.
  • Lends support and guidance for grants (federal, state, private) and research relevant to the Pediatrics Department as well as education and teaching innovation.

Work Schedule

40 hours per week. This is an administration position that includes a faculty appointment.

Expected Pay Scale

Minimum: $230,000.00

Maximum: $271,669.00
