About the Team

The Uber Marketplace is designed to move riders & drivers efficiently from where they are to where they want to go. Every dollar that is transacted in the Uber Marketplace (driver forecasting, dynamic pricing fares, matching driver/rider pricing, and overall marketplace health) is informed and influenced by data – and our Data Science team decides the algorithms that enable millions of earners and consumers move together daily.

Uber operates in a constantly-evolving and competitive environment, across a diverse set of markets and product categories. Assessing the success or failure of a product or investment strategy depends on deeply understanding this context and quantifying the impact with thoughtfully-defined success metrics. Doing this - and doing it well - at Uber’s global scale is an interesting and complex problem with meaningful impact on our P&L. The Marketplace Data Science team applies their expertise in statistical modeling, machine learning, economics, data analysis, and business strategy to build scalable data platforms, generate actionable insights, and drive our incentive investment decisions.

About the Role

As a Principal Data Scientist - Marketplace, you will lead high-profile, complex Data Science initiatives to provide data-driven insights to identify new opportunities to take our products to the next level. You’ll work closely with Product Management, Engineering, Regional General Managers, Strategy, and Finance partners across Uber's Mobility businesses and geographies, with exposure to the highest levels of executive leadership.

This role will help build and optimize Marketplace Matching and Pricing technology for our drivers and riders. With our unique and scalable technology stack, you will help launch competitive differentiators that will grow Uber as the preferred platform of choice for our customers. You will lead with deep customer empathy, and rely on data and user research to make informed decisions with solid product instincts.

What You’ll Do

  • As a Director-level Individual Contributor, you will lead the delivery of insights and solutions to support both the technology and understanding of customer support.
  • Drive rigor in our data science approaches to customer support problems; these approaches include machine learning, experimentation, causal learning, time series analysis, and natural language processing.
  • Work with a cross-functional team that includes product management, engineering, operations, and others to execute projects.
  • Use data to solve ambiguous, meaningful business problems impacting our everyday customers.

What You’ll Need

  • BS degree in Math, Economics, Bioinformatics, Statistics, Engineering, or other quantitative fields.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience.

Bonus Points If

  • Ph.D. degree in Math, Economics, Bioinformatics, Statistics, Engineering, or other quantitative fields.
  • Experience in leading complex data science initiatives as an individual contributor and Science SME to executive leadership.
  • Knowledge of underlying mathematical foundations of statistics, machine learning, optimization, economics, and analytics.
  • Experience with experimental design, exploratory data analysis, statistical analysis, testing, and model development.
  • Proficient in both a data ETL language (e.g. SQL) and a scripting language like Python or R for data analysis.
  • Track record in prioritizing and driving multiple work-streams forward simultaneously.
  • Ability to mentor other Science resources, even if they don't directly report.
  • Proven track record of collaborating with and influencing stakeholders.
  • Principled yet pragmatic, having conviction and being authentic in your approach, but situationally aware enough to adapt when needed.
  • Sound business judgment, ability to influence others, and strong analytical thinking skills.
  • Outstanding storyteller with the ability to articulate a clear vision that balances principled decision-making, user empathy, and data analysis.

Benefits (U.S.)

  • 401(k) plan, ESPP, gym reimbursement, paid company holidays and Uber credits.
  • Full medical/dental/vision package to fit your needs.
  • Unlimited vacation policy; work hard and take time when you need it.
