Role Overview:
Self-Help Credit Union has a Loan Officer role available with our Charlotte, NC team. You will manage the consumer loan process for a mission-driven credit union. Consumer loans include vehicles, home improvement, home equity, unsecured loans, and credit cards, among others. The loan officer interviews applicants and carefully evaluates applications. Successful loan officer candidates should possess strong interpersonal and analytical skills, and supports the sales and marketing aspects of the credit union.
We are seeking a Loan Officer to join our Charlotte, North Carolina team!
What You’ll Do:
  • Manage the consumer loan process from initiation through closing, which includes: interviewing loan applicants, preparing applications, and providing timely and accurate disclosures while operating with moderate credit authority and complying with all federal and state regulations.
  • Prequalify loan applicants by examining borrower information and documentation such as credit reports and financial documents; assess creditworthiness, determine adequacy of income, credit, and collateral, and calculate repayment risk.
  • Determine the maximum purchase price/loan amount based on the customer’s financial circumstances and needs within credit union policy and procedures.
  • Verify accuracy of loan amounts and repayment terms on approved loan applications.
  • Prepare files for processing and underwriting; monitor processing progress and troubleshoot issues that arise during the collection, verification, and analysis of supporting documentation.
  • Communicate with borrower and referral source, if applicable, throughout the loan process.
  • Promote the Credit Union to individuals and groups in the community and participate in business development efforts to promote Self-Help mortgage and consumer loan products.
  • May market mortgage loans and refer to the mortgage team referrals for follow-up.
  • Implement new loan products and services in accordance with management direction.
  • Counsel members at their request or when evidence indicates there are budgeting problems or imminent financial difficulties. Assist members in choosing the loan product and related products/services that best meet their needs.
  • Proactively offer and cross-sell Credit Union products and services.
  • Assist collections staff in resolving delinquent accounts when requested.
  • Keep abreast of Self-Help policies and procedures involved in processing consumer loans.
  • Work and train with Underwriter to understand loan products, process, and policy.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
What You’ll Need:
  • High school diploma and 2 to 3 years of experience in retail banking or equivalent related experience. College degree preferred.
  • Strong commitment to our mission – creating economic opportunity for traditionally underserved communities.
  • Preference for working in organizations that place priority on teamwork and collaboration
  • Knowledge of economic and accounting principles and practices, the financial markets, banking, and the analysis and reporting of financial data to:
  • Prepare and analyze financial statements, operating projections, budgets, and cash flows
  • Evaluate and make sound recommendations based on financial risk assessment and underwriting criteria
  • Sales and Marketing — Knowledge of principles and methods for showing, promoting, and selling products or services. This includes:
  • Marketing strategy and tactics
  • Product demonstration
  • Sales techniques
  • Sales control systems
    • Ability to form and maintain strong relationships with internal and external customers.
    • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups and /or individuals.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
    • Ability and willingness to work beyond normal work hours, as needed.
