Position Summary:


Plans, organizes, develops and directs the overall operation of the Life Enrichment Department in accordance with the current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines and regulations, established policies and procedures, and as may be directed by the Executive Director. Ensures that an ongoing program of activities is designed to meet, in accordance with the comprehensive assessment, the interests and the physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being of each resident.

Specific Task/Duties:

Plans, develops, organizes, implements, evaluates and directs the activity programs of the facility, as well as assists in arranging transportation for community outings. Recruits and selects competent staff within budgeted guidelines. Provides management of performance enhancements, annual reviews and terminations in conjunction with Human Resources. Delegates the authority, responsibility and accountability necessary, to other responsible department personnel, to maintain the operations of the department.

Assists with the development, administration and coordination of department policies and procedures. Reviews department policies, procedures and job descriptions, at least annually and makes recommendations for changes to the Executive Director.

Maintains knowledge of current federal and state regulations, as well as professional standards through attendance of educational programs and in-services, as needed.

Participates in the development and implementation of activity care plans and resident assessments. Involves residents and family members in the planning of activities.

Performs administrative requirements, such as completing necessary forms, reports, etc., and submitting to the Administrator as required.

Maintains a productive working relationship with clinical departments and other health related facilities and organizations, as well as coordinates activities with other departments.

Develops, implements and maintains an ongoing quality assurance program for the department.

Works collaboratively to meet departmental and facility needs which may require the performance of other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

Transports residents on outings/trips and assists the department as assigned. Follows safety policies and procedures whenever transporting residents to and from programs. Ensures wheelchairs are secure prior to operating the bus. Operates the bus chair lift in a safe manner.

IV. Position Requirements

Minimum

Preferred

Education

Associate Degree in Occupational Therapy

Bachelor Degree in Recreational Therapy

Applicable Experience

2 years recent experience in Recreational Therapy or related department.

1 year of supervisory experience.

Preferred Experience

3-5 years recent experience in Recreational Therapy or related department.

2 or more years of supervisory experience.

Professional Membership, Licensures, Certifications

Eligibility for certification as therapeutic recreation specialist.

Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist through NCTRC Or Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant in the state of practice.; CDL Class C with Passenger Endorsement Licensure.

V. Essential Functions (Refer to Position Description Guidelines)

1. General Working Conditions

Works in office area(s) as well as throughout facility. Is subject to frequent interruptions. Is involved with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies and personnel, etc., under all conditions and circumstances. Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel and visitors. Communicates with the medical staff, nursing personnel, and other department supervisors. Works beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays when necessary, as well as in other positions as needed. Is subject to call back during emergency conditions (e.g., severe weather, evacuation, post-disaster, etc.). Is involved in community or civic health matters and projects as appropriate. Is subject to injury from falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc. throughout the workday, as well as to reactions from dust, disinfectants, tobacco smoke, and other air contaminants. May be subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including TB and the AIDS and Hepatitis B virus. May be subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals.

2. Physical Demands of the Position

Moves intermittently during working hours. Walking, reaching, climbing, bending, lifting, grasping, fine motor coordination, pushing, pulling and sitting for long periods of time. Must function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively and harmoniously with residents, families, personnel, support agencies and outside agencies. Must meet the general health requirement set forth in the policies of this facility, which include a medical and physical examination. May be required to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.

3. Mental Acuity Requirements of the Job

Must be able to cope with the mental, emotional, and physical stress of the position.
