Field Scientist, LI-COR Professional Services

Primary Work Location

This is a remote based position, in the United States. Preference will go to candidates located close to a major airport hub, ideally in the Central US (Chicago, Denver, Dallas) 

Overview

For over 40 years, LI-COR and Onset products have been the trusted monitoring solution for recording accurate and reliable data supporting research initiatives, sustainability efforts and essential commercial business decisions. 

Reporting to the Vice President, Commercial Strategy Development, the Field Scientist will serve as the project lead scientist for field deployments as part of LI-COR Professional Services engagements. The role includes direct support for customer projects that require LI-COR instrumentation to include project requirements assessment, hands on instrument deployment and subsequent data analysis. The ideal candidate will have existing knowledge and experience with greenhouse gas flux instrumentation to establish a plan to use best practices and sound operating procedures to ensure the data collected is scientifically sound and meets the requirements for the creation of data analytics and reporting. They will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to understand the project goal and then develop and execute the project. They must be able to effectively troubleshoot and diagnose instrumentation issues as they arise, and support the development of data reports to the customer using web-based tools. Must have a passion for high quality direct measurements and helping others understand the insight those measurements can offer. Requires up to 50% travel.

Position Responsibilities

Field Work

  • Help guide deployment strategy to achieve scientific objectives
  • Prepare instruments for field deployments in support of the deployment strategy
  • Deploy instrumentation in the field and ensure that they are collecting data of sufficient quality and reliability to support the generation of required data products
  • Work closely with internal and external stakeholders to quickly respond to instrumentation or data quality issues, provide recommendations to proactively prevent data quality issues from arising, and coordinate with Product Strategy and R&D to improve the delivery of customer reports.

Scientific Data Analysis

  • Write customer-facing reports and help develop tools to automate the delivery of these reports.
  • Work with Data Science and Software Engineering to develop data pipelines to support the automated delivery of these reports.
  • Maintain up to date technical knowledge of new and existing products by spending time working with instruments, software, and applications.
  • Aid in the design and execution of product development and science and support projects as necessary.
  • Gather information about customer needs, suggestions for service improvements, new service ideas, user issues and competitor activities.

Professional Qualifications

Education : Ph.D. in ecophysiology, environmental physics, micrometeorology, natural resources science, plant physiology, agronomy, soil science, or a related field; or M.S. in disciplines noted above with five years industrial or academic experience in a field of direct commercial interest to the company. 

Experience :

  • Experience deploying eddy covariance instrumentation in the field, including experience troubleshooting and resolving technical issues involving electronics, power systems, and communications systems.
  • Experience programming in a scripting language such as R or Python, preferable to perform calculations on environmental monitoring data.
  • Practical experience in at least three of the following disciplines: ecophysiology, environmental physics, micrometeorology, natural resources science, plant physiology, agronomy, or soil science.
  • Knowledgeable and experienced with software data processing, quality control, and scientific analysis of eddy covariance flux, radiation, soil, and/or micrometeorological data. Concentrated focus on either; (1) Successful operation of year-round eddy covariance stations for energy, water, and carbon dioxide flux measurements or similar systems. (2) Strong comprehension of the techniques, instrumentation, and laboratory procedures fundamental to measurements in plant physiology, photosynthesis, environmental physics, agronomy, or related field.
  • Understanding of mathematical and physical principles as they relate to instrumentation and biological or environmental issues.
  • Demonstrated record of writing scientific papers and/or posters or proven history of writing technical or marketing documents describing creative scientific activity of LI-COR products or applications.
  • Ability to mentor others or lead teams to accomplish technical goals.
