Title: Director, Employee Relations
Unit: Human Resources
Reports to: AVP, Human Resources
Status: Full Time; Regular; Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of Employee Relations works in concert with the AVP, Human Resources to provide leadership and guidance on the administration of all employee relations issues, developing strategies to support supervisors in staff management to address areas where employees may need to be supported or performance concerns may need to be documented and strategized to sustain employee retention and growth as part of the HR team and to minimize the number and impact of legal claims related to agency employment practices. This position oversees the resolution of employee performance issues, and the smooth voluntary and involuntary exiting of employees from the agency. This position works in close collaboration with the Fortune Society's General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel as well as the outside counsel and may be called on to assist with discrimination and harassment investigations.

Travel Requirements : Will require local travel to our program sites in Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx and citywide meetings where appropriate.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop strategies to manage employee relations issues. Provide counsel and training to managers on how to properly address and document performance issues in accordance with legal requirements and agency values.
- Work with supervisors on best practices in staff management, providing guidance on employee performance or difficult interactions among staff, helping Fortune to be an employer that provides an inclusive work environment that supports and celebrates all staff.
- May be called on to assist in EEO investigations in coordination with the Fortune Society's General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel, taking complaints, participating in witness interviews, writing reports on investigation findings, and coordinating with Legal on interim measures to protect complainants as well as disciplinary responses to employee misconduct.
- Track and document all employee relations issues and support the tracking and documentation of EEO investigations
- Review and recommend policies and procedures related to employment practices, ensuring agency compliance with federal, state and local employment laws and regulations. Assist with drafting procedures and policies to comply with new federal, state, and City laws and regulations.
- As needed, support the Benefits team on reasonable accommodations and cooperative dialogues with employees
- Oversee process for employees exiting the agency, both voluntarily and involuntarily; ensure that procedures are followed for exit interviews and final payouts.
- In consultation with HR team report on key metrics on a monthly basis. This should include but is not limited to: turnover numbers and reasons, and number of employee relations issues, Work with other Directors in HR and the AVP, Human Resources to ensure the overall smooth running of the HR department.
- Other duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree required. Credentialing in Human Resources (S/PHR or SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP) or JD (with or without a license) a plus;
- Minimum 5 years of experience in Human Resources or related area in a fast-paced organization including at least 3 years of experience in employee relations, preferably in a not-for-profit organization;
- Must possess solid knowledge of federal, state and city labor laws and regulations and expectation s/he will stay abreast of legal or regulatory changes affecting HR;
- Demonstrated experience working across a multi-site structure;
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and compile complex data for planning and reporting purposes;
- Practiced in performance management and employee relations;
- Superior skills in MS Office including Excel, Word, and PPT;
- Customer focused with experience and ability to work with staff at a variety of levels and to coordinate multiple stakeholders and projects;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- Ability to multi-task with strong organizational and time management skills;
- Good self-direction and ability to problem solve and work as a team;
