Nature and Scope of Job :
As a counselor, one must function within the support services provided under the definitions and regulations of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) 34 CFR 300.34(c)(2).
As a member of the District's secondary staff, a counselor is to provide a comprehensive guidance program for students in grades 9-12 or until age 21. The counselor will provide services to meet the educational and emotional needs of all identified special education students; consult with teachers, staff and parents to enhance their effectiveness in helping students; and supports other secondary programs.
Job Functions:

Occasional exposure to weather extremes.
Essential Functions:
1. Assists in planning and implementing a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students within the school district counselor/social worker curriculum.
2. Assists students to overcome problems that impede learning and assists them in making sound educational choices.
3. Provides individual crisis counseling and developmental counseling referred by teachers, parents, administrators, or the student him/herself.
4. Provides opportunities to make home visitations when required in order to improve school/family communication.
5. To develop assistance plans for students "at risk", result of child abuse, drugs and alcohol, sexual abuse, rape, suicide, STD's, pregnancy, court probation, dropouts, runaways and truants.
6. To provide guidance for post high school plans; employment, occupational trends and opportunities; higher education, academic preparation needed, financial aids information, grants, scholarships, work programs and loans; military services.
7. Provides small group counseling to students with similar concerns or needs.
8. Acts as a resource for classroom teachers in any and all areas that concern human behavior.
9. Makes home visitations for the purpose of building a healthy rapport between parents and children, parents and school, and children and school.
10. Preparing a social or developmental history on a child with a disability.
11. Assisting in developing positive behavioral intervention strategies.
12. Provides individual and/or family counseling to address student concerns and/or needs.
13.. To make referrals for students to outside agencies that are identified as agencies that can provide satisfactory assistance to a student's problem.
Post High School
1. Conduct follow-up studies of graduates in order to gain information and insight as to how the school might change to better serve the needs of graduation.

4. Special Needs Groups/ Counseling and advising
5. Teacher or parent referrals for personal counseling
6. Referrals to private treatment centers and aftercare
7. Counseling/support groups
8. Peer Tutor - coordinate and support
9. Follows school district policies and procedures
10. Assists with the pre-intervention activities of students in each building they are assigned to.
11. Assists with and/or develops new programs as necessary to meet the needs of identified and potential students in special education programs in the buildings they are assigned to
12. Promotes positive public relations with the community and within the school district by using positive verbal and non-verbal communication and interaction skills at all times.
13. Provides leadership with all staff members in maintaining the necessary confidentiality of information as it relates to students and staff that they work with on a daily basis.
All Programs Require:
Follow Up - after counseling implementations of plans and making sure the options are being implemented.
On Going Process - keep in touch with student for the high school career.
Job Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Mental Ability
Awareness of and familiarity with financial aid counseling, group counseling, drug and alcohol counseling, academic and career guidance.
Knowledge of Special Education Law.
Must perform a variety of duties.
Make evaluations based on data.
Must deal with people.
Must make judgments and decisions.
Minimum Requirements (Education, License, Certification or Formal Training):
Must meet the Professional Teachers Standards Board licensure, State of Wyoming teacher certification and professional standards.
Must have a Masters degree in Social Work from an accredited institution

Physical Demands:
Be able to stand, walk, and sit for long periods without fatigue or discomfort.

Be able to work at a computer for a portion of each day without fatigue or discomfort.
Environmental Demands:
Be able to spend most of the time inside classrooms with some work outside in cold/hot weather. Be able to tolerate noise up to 90 decibels.
