Salary: On-Target-Earning (OTE) includes a starting range of $137,000 - $169,000.
The successful candidate's starting base will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills, experience, and geographic location. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the base range for this role.
Who You Are
The Research and Development (R&D) Optical Integration Engineer (Mid-Senior level) plays a crucial role in developing new products, redesigning existing products, and testing product concepts for biopharmaceutical and medical applications; as well as working with manufacturing vendors and suppliers in alignment with the company’s strategic goals, objectives, resources, and priorities. We are looking for candidates having broad experience and knowledge in integration of optical components for scientific instrumentation.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s Degree or higher in Engineering – Optical Engineering, Physics is highly desirable!
- Must have broad experience and knowledge in principle and integration of optical components for light scattering and UV-visible absorption.
- Minimum 2-6 years of experience in a related position designing measuring instruments from the ground up with optical components.
- Must be well versed with necessary tools to analyze the performance of the optical components and integrated system.
- Requires a successful track record of product development, product launch, and testing on product concepts for biopharmaceutical and medical applications; able to devise comprehensive design of experiment to validate concepts and test.
- Demonstrated understanding and application of basic principles, theories, concepts, techniques, and a working knowledge of engineering disciplines and product development processes.
- Demonstrated capacity for solving problems.
- Versatility, flexibility, and willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm.
- Capable of handling multiple projects and tasks simultaneously, as well as working both independently and within a team.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft tools, including Word, Excel, MS Project, Access, PowerPoint; CAD, Solid Works, and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.
- Project management skills, problem-solving skills, communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong ability to influence and gain acceptance and enhance company R&D capabilities.
- Prior experience developing and testing optical systems for biomedical and diagnostics applications is preferred.
- Knowledge and experience with various types of light sources, including but not limited to LEDs and Lasers.
- Knowledge and experience with various types of detectors, including but not limited to photodiodes, PMTs, and cameras. Must have experience with detection of low light signals (photon counting regime).
- Demonstrated experience designing full optical systems, utilizing components such as lenses, optical filters, and diffraction gratings. Applications must include fluorescence detection and imaging, microscopy, and absorbance-based measurement.
- Expert level proficiency in Zemax (Non-Sequential and Sequential mode). Data analysis with MATLAB, Python, or other similar tools.
- Good presentation skills; must be able to clearly and concisely present complex ideas to a multidisciplinary group.
- Good documentation skills; ability to capture technical details in a concise and clear manner according to good documentation practices.
Job Responsibilities and Expectations
- Leads and functions as a contributing member of a multidisciplinary project team in the design, selection, integration, and verification of various off-the-shelf optical components for the development of new instrumentation for biopharmaceutical and medical applications.
- Conducts research and concept prototyping for new product development or integration to existing products.
- Contributes inventions, new designs, or techniques to solve technical problems or improve existing product processes.
- Communicates ongoing research, product development, and testing with appropriate stakeholders.
- Develops protocols, processes, procedures, work instructions, and equipment specifications, and all other requirements for new products.
- Develops and executes processes in alignment with all regulatory and quality standards.
- Collaborates with other engineers to analyze issues, test, identify, and implement the most effective solutions in a timely manner.
- Develops and maintains control documentation including part models, assemblies, drawings, specifications, procedures, and work instructions.
- Collaborates with cross-functional teams to develop and transfer new products into production by identifying assembly techniques, manufacturing processes, and design recommendations as appropriate.
- Able to travel to vendors, labs, and customer sites as needed.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and establishing networks.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
