An exciting opportunity is available to join Gewalt Hamilton Associates, an employee-owned, multi-faceted civil engineering and land surveying company that has built a reputation of civil engineering with a personal approach. We are seeking a Staff Engineer to join the Municipal Division team to join our growing team located in Vernon Hills, IL. This is an exempt position with straight overtime pay. The Staff Engineer will report to the Division Director or Assistant Division Director.
This position requires a Professional Engineer Intern (PEI) license in the State of Illinois, or to obtain it within 6 months of hire. This position also requires independent work skills and the ability to communicate with GHA staff as well as to communicate effectively to outside agencies. Additionally, this position requires field and office work.
As a civil engineer, you will utilize the company values in all phases of your work. You shall demonstrate strong organizational and communication skills, be a self-starter, be able to carry out assignments with limited oversight in a timely manner, and show competency in the following areas:

- Read, interpret, and create technical documents associated with your position.
- Ability to apply practical understanding to carry out detailed oral instructions.
- Self-starting, detail-oriented individual with organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Visit project sites to assist construction observation duties.
- Complete engineering tasks with limited oversight and seek feedback at appropriate periods of work under the supervision and mentoring of other civil engineers.
- Work in a team setting with other team members within all divisions of the company.
- The ability to manage and execute multiple design-related tasks as assigned on budget and within communicated schedules.
- Strong sense of urgency and self-initiative to meet deadlines.
- Assist in proposal preparation and technical report writing.
- Responsible for maintaining technical knowledge through completion of various training initiatives; attending seminars, reviewing professional publications, and attending in-house systems/management training.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field.
- Hold a Professional Engineer Intern (PEI) license in the State of Illinois or obtain it within 6 months of hire.
- Have at least 2 years of civil engineering experience and one year experience as a major contributor or a project leader on a complex project requiring additional and specific expertise in the disciplines needed to design or construct the project.
- Experience with Microstation/GEOPAK and/or AutoCAD/Civil 3D
- Have a valid Illinois Driver's License.
- Must be able to collaborate with other team members and have good interpersonal skills.
- Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
