The Creative Director is responsible for the visual identity and all art needs of Austin Monthly and Austin Home. They will oversee photography, page design and in-house art needs for both brands. Qualified candidates will be equal parts creative and organized. They will have their finger on the pulse of what's happening in Austin, elevating both publications in the eyes of our readers. We need a strong collaborator who can pitch original ideas and act on constructive feedback.
Primary Responsibilities:
Please note this role will be based in Austin, TX with occasional trips to San Antonio, TX. It can be fully remote, but must be based in / around Austin to attend meetings, go to photoshoots, etc.
The Creative Director is responsible for the visual identity and all art needs of Austin Monthly and Austin Home. They will oversee photography, page design and in-house art needs for both brands. Qualified candidates will be equal parts creative and organized. They will have their finger on the pulse of what's happening in Austin, elevating both publications in the eyes of our readers. We need a strong collaborator who can pitch original ideas and act on constructive feedback.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Oversee freelance photography and graphic needs for both magazines. This includes mantaining a network of creative freelancers, vendors, scheduling photoshoots, and managing payment for services.
- Design editorial pages for both magazines and any special sections published. This includes pre-production collaboration with editors to determine themes and page count.
- Coordinate print production needs between magazine editors and Hearst Central Hub. This includes uploading editorial pages to Cue, sending PDFs to pre-press and making any necessary revisions.
- Own the design and creation of in-house marking and advertising needs, such as event collateral and marketing material.
- Create design schemes for special advertising projects, such as Top Lawyers and Faces of ATX.
- Create digital-only graphics as needed and requested by editorial. This could include social share cards or newsletter banners.
- Proficient in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
- Technical knowledge of the print production process, including papers specs, file types and more.
- Strong print and digital design chops with the ability to deliver innovate magazine layouts issue after issue.
- Ability to multitask and manage multiple projects at once.
- Experience converting print designs for digital layouts and specifications.
- Experience with time-management and creativity. The Creative Director will juggle multiple projects for both brands simultaneously. We need a self-starter who can also bring innovative design to every issue, month after month.
