The Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) is the statewide professional association for physicians and medical students, supporting 25,000 members. We are dedicated to educating and advocating for the physicians of Massachusetts and patients locally and nationally. A leadership voice in health care, the MMS contributes physician and patient perspectives to influence health-related legislation at the state and federal levels, works in support of public health, provides expert advice on physician practice management, and addresses issues of physician well-being. Under the auspices of NEJM Group, the MMS extends our mission globally by advancing medical knowledge from research to patient care through the New England Journal of Medicine, NEJM Evidence, NEJM AI, NEJM Catalyst, NEJM Journal Watch, and through our accredited and comprehensive continuing medical education programs.

The world has changed, and so has the way we work. The MMS has adopted a flexible work model that allows most employees to choose where they work – at home, onsite in our Waltham or Boston office, or a combination of the two – based on their preferences and our business needs. Because what matters is the work we do, not where we do it.

Responsibilities:

  1. Coordinates and oversees technology and processes employed by Editorial Production in the publication of NEJM. Ensures that source XML is produced accurately and on schedule, and that it conforms to established formats and quality standards.
  2. Manages, maintains, and enhances Editorial Production tracking and scheduling database (currently in Filemaker), and helps evaluate alternative solutions when necessary.
  3. Works closely with other Editorial Production departments on XML used for display of text and graphics. This includes text and image content within interactive visual, tabular, and mathematical elements.
  4. Works with other departments as needed to develop XML protocols and processes for NEJM content. This includes consultation about appropriate schemas and taxonomies for content management and input into development processes for tagging editorial content.
  5. Helps create and maintain JATS tagging style and production guidelines for producing NEJM content.
  6. Interprets JATS XML specification to suit NEJM requirements with input from appropriate departments if needed, mapping all NEJM content to appropriate JATS structures.
  7. Helps train staff as needed to handle XML and other production tasks.
  8. Collaborates with other MMS departments (e.g., Content Systems), NEJM Editorial Production groups, and outside vendors on technological innovations involving NEJM metadata and content.
  9. Keep abreast of technological developments and innovations by attending conferences and taking advantage of training.
  10. Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required.
  • A minimum of 10 years of editorial production experience, preferably in the setting of an academic journal with an emphasis on medical/scientific content, is necessary.
  • Excellent logic and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with NISO Journal Article Tag Suite (JATS) XML and with medical journal content. Also required are the ability to devise and perform software testing, knowledge of XML workflows and tools such as Arbortext and Oxygen, the skills to help develop and test new processes for XML, InDesign, and text conversions as well as knowledge of web publishing processes.
  • Must have a working knowledge of publishing tools including Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office, FileMaker, Oxygen, and Windows and Mac OSX platforms, as well as XML, XSLT, Unicode, and HTML.

Our generous benefits offerings include: 3 weeks of paid vacation, 6 personal days, 12 sick days, 13 paid holidays, medical and dental plans, 401(k) plans with company match, back-up childcare assistance, tuition assistance and more!

The MMS has earned praise as one of the Top Places to Work in Massachusetts by The Boston Globe for the past 12 years in a row! The Globe surveys employees regarding their opinions about company leadership, benefits, ethics, values and culture, and recognizes those companies who receive high marks from their employees.
