Job Description - Data Analyst II (3308291)

The Shalek Lab ( MIT, Broad Institute, and Ragon Institute) specializes in leveraging novel single-cell genomic approaches to understand the behaviors of complex biological systems. The expectation is to work on a diverse array of projects in the global human health space, from SARS-CoV-2, HIV and other infectious diseases, requiring seamless interaction with clinical teams and meticulous management of sample processing—from reception through RNA-seq library preparation, next-generation sequencing, and subsequent data analysis. A key responsibility will be the effective interpretation and communication of research findings to both the lab and the wider scientific community. This role goes beyond the confines of traditional laboratory work, encompassing the development and delivery of external training programs in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), aimed at disseminating information related to a variety of methodologies and fostering global research partnerships.

While the core technique of our lab remains the Seq-Well method—a versatile, in-house platform for single-cell RNA-sequencing—this position calls for a dynamic individual capable of leveraging a range of single-cell sequencing technologies. The ideal candidate will not only be proficient in the practical application of these methods but also possess the discernment to determine the most appropriate technique for each research question, ensuring the lab remains at the cutting edge of the field.

This role presents a unique opportunity to lead larger, more complex projects, as well as independent projects, offering a platform to significantly impact both the lab’s research trajectory and the broader scientific community. It is designed for those eager to advance their career within an interdisciplinary, technology-driven environment, with unparalleled access to the intellectual and technical resources across all three affiliated institutes.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Independently analyze complex multi-omic data sets from high-throughput sequencing projects, including single-cell RNA-sequencing.
  2. Conduct in-depth analysis and interpretation of results, integrating findings with current scientific literature to advance the lab’s research goals.
  3. Clearly articulate findings from complex data sets to both internal and external collaborators, including non-specialist audiences in LMICs.
  4. Independently meet with local and international collaborators, leading discussions on findings and advising on the best next steps to drive projects to completion.
  5. Prepare and deliver training programs for external personnel in LMICs, tailored to different levels of expertise.
  6. Devise, optimize, and validate novel laboratory protocols to enhance research efficiency and effectiveness.
  7. Prepare and provide thorough summary reports of workflow outputs to team and collaborators.
  8. Organize and summarize acquired data, using learned scientific and statistical techniques.
  9. Organize and draft material for the preparation of research papers, manuscripts, progress reports, and other documents for publication and/or presentation.
  10. Set up, optimize, and apply a variety of scientific techniques, particularly diverse methods of single-cell RNA-sequencing.
  11. Maintain detailed documentation either through a laboratory notebook and well annotated scripts.
  12. Coordinate in the development and refinement of bioinformatics workflows to streamline analytical procedures and data analysis pipelines.
  13. Perform independent literature reviews to stay current with the latest scientific advancements and to inform experimental design and collaborations.
  14. Train and mentor junior and incoming team members as well as external personnel on performing advanced wet lab techniques and analytical procedures.
  15. Serve as a point person for resolving technical issues with laboratory equipment and computational resources that could impact research outcomes.
  16. Manage project timelines and deliverables, ensuring efficient progress and adherence to deadlines.
  17. Oversee administrative tasks related to projects, including ordering, receiving, and organizing lab supplies, and managing vendor relationships.

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree required.

EXPERIENCE:

At least two years lab and research experience (via course work, internships, etc.)

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  1. Advanced ability to analyze and interpret data sets.
  2. Ability to communicate data in a clear and concise manner.
  3. Advanced proficiency in Unix, Python, and R.
  4. Technical proficiency in Bioinformatics.
  5. Demonstrates competence in research techniques and ability to innovate novel methodologies.
  6. Works well both independently and as a team member.
  7. Good communication skills.
  8. Strategic time management and prioritization.
  9. Leadership and project management skills.
  10. Independent problem solving and innovation.
  11. Ability to perform multiple tasks independently.
  12. Self-directed learning and management of tasks.
