Job Summary and Qualifications
The Manager is responsible to the Director, Vice President and/or the Chief Nursing Officer for facilitating, coordinating and delegating the processing and delivery of sterile instruments and equipment. S/he is responsible 24 hours a day for the staffing and management of these tasks/services in each of his/her units and or promoting policy and procedure development. Consistently follows the National Standards and Recommended Practices for Sterilization, and for the acquisition, development, and utilization of resources (human and material) needed to fulfill those responsibilities. S/he works cooperatively with administrators, physicians, staff, other managers and all customers of the Methodist Healthcare System to provide services, which consistently meet and exceed the expectations of their customers. This is accomplished by assessing and prioritizing opportunities to improve, plan and implement effective changes and evaluate outcomes of process improvement activities. The Manager models behavior consistent with the MHS management philosophy actively supports the Mission and Vision of the MHS and effectively maintains the hospital's Standards of Care and Practice.
Essential Job Functions:
1.Builds and maintains a high functioning team.
2.Manages personnel including interviewing, work allocation, orientation and training, staff development, problem resolution, evaluating performance, making recommendations for personnel actions, and motivation of employees to achieve peak performance. Is responsible for meeting unit productivity targets.
3.Plans, organizes, facilitates and directs unit on a 24 hour basis in accordance with recognized practice and accepted internal (e.g. unit, department, and hospital) and external (e.g. JCAHO, Medicare, AAMI, OSHA) standards.
4.Develops the departmental scope of service and practice.
5.Develops and implements policies and procedures which relate to the particular unit specialty and integrates standards of practice into unit operations/collaborative paths that support the provision of services.
6.Directs processes to assess, improve and maintain the quality of practice according to the hospital plan for quality improvement.
7.Participates in the planning, development and management of operational and equipment budgets annually. Provides financial variance analysis reports in a timely manner. Reviews monthly financial statistics and plans expenditures according to budget limitations.
8.Evaluates the collaborative care system on unit(s) utilizing variance reports, clinical data, and cost/quality outcomes.
9.Anticipates the purchase or replacement of equipment with input from staff and physicians. Implements the equipment purchase process. Anticipates and recommends needs for added space and needed services not provided by the organization.
10. Provides leadership and direction for staffing their unit(s) in accordance with the organizational goals and objectives. Identifies modifications in staffing based on patient acuity and census.
11. Communicates with staff and keeps staff current with appropriate information through staff meetings, newsletters and announcements. This includes educational needs identified for the unit, information from Process improvement activities, new technology/therapy/service, plant technology, safety program, findings from Infection Control, unit goals, objectives, and standards, and unit problems and their resolutions. 12. Investigates patient, visitor, employee and physician incidents and takes immediate action to resolve it, including follow-up.
13.Promotes professional practice by mentoring unit staff in the development of leadership skills, facilitating shared governance, and encouraging personal and professional growth. Encourages collaborative relationships between team members, Physicians and O.R. staff.
Equipment Utilized: Meditech, PC, Common Office Equipment, all sterilization equipment
Required Knowledge, Skill, Abilities and Other Job-Related Characteristics (KSAOs) Minimum Education and Experience:
Education Required: High School Graduate or GED. Certification through an Accredited Organization (IAHCSMM) as a Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) and/or Graduate from an Accredited School of Surgical Technology with Certification (NBSTSA). Associate or Bachelors Degree.
Experience:
At least 5 years experience in a Central Service Role as a Technician, Team Leader or Assistant Manager. Previous Management experience preferred.
Demonstrated leadership skills.
Evidence of continued professional development.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office is preferable.
1. New hires as of 01/01/2013 must have five (5) years experience in a sterile processing technician role AND/OR surgical technologist role.
2. Employee completes initial and ongoing training and competencies as defined by service line, facility and department/unit which are specific to the needs(if applicable).
