Business Development Analyst
Cooley is seeking a Business Development Analyst to join the Marketing & Business Development team.
Position summary:
Supporting the efforts of the firm's Business Development professionals and attorneys, the Business Development Analyst is responsible for converting targeted research and analysis into insightful and highly actionable intelligence to aid in strategic decision-making and drive business development, growth, prospective/client retention and other commercial opportunities. The Business Development Analyst will use specialized experience and knowledge working with large data sets to synthesize inputs into impactful reports and convey these reports clearly and concisely. Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Position responsibilities:- Analyze and integrate internal and external data pertaining to pipeline and target development stages of companies' growth or industry segments and identify cross-selling opportunities based on the firm's service offerings
- Act as a trusted resource for Attorneys who initiate various requests for marketing, business development and client services support by understanding the appropriate internal stakeholders and resources available and then ensure the proper process for next steps are followed
- In collaboration with the firm's IS Legal Competitive & Enterprise Intelligence team:
- Develop reports that identify venture capital, growth capital, and private equity relationships and contacts, and convert these reports into manageable data and work products that can be applied to BD targeting initiatives and client servicing
- Exercise discretion and judgement to help design and develop reporting processes and conduct analysis by researching startup formations, later stage company fundraises, and specific sector and industry-related information
- Conduct competitive analysis to compare how similar firms are conducting BD and marketing activities
- Analyze market trends, industry developments, client movements and relevant client news to provide actionable intelligence for practice and regional marketing, business development and attorney teams
- Take existing information from various regional fundraising reports & sources and develop templates to be used for sector and regional targeting exercises
- Enhance custom formats for delivering business information request
- Support, and sometimes manage the process for intake and organization of the firm's investor connect tool which involves researching and relationship mapping of appropriate investor contacts for clients. Prepare attorneys and BD professionals for correspondence supporting investor outreach
- Support investor outreach efforts by maintaining up-to-date information on investors and their areas of focus, history of company referrals to each investor and outcomes and facilitating ongoing matching of new company opportunities with investors
- Maintain knowledge and understanding of industry related events and activities, and identify where competitors have visibility and market share
- Test business processes and recommend improvements
- All other duties as assigned or required
Required:
- After orientation at Cooley LLP, exhibit strong technology skills in the Microsoft Office suite, iManage and other firm applications to include Adobe Acrobat
- Available to work overtime, as required
- 3+ years directly applicable experience in the field (e.g., research-focused role ideally in business intelligence, venture/startup ecosystem research and/or legal research); senior level candidates must have 4+ years directly applicable experience in the field and performing exempt-level duties.In addition, work more independently, demonstrate escalating ownership and mastery of assigned area.
- Knowledge and experience conducting corporate and industry legal research using online and third-party based tools, such as Pitchbook, Crunchbase, IntroHive, and LinkedIn
- Experience working with financial datasets and investor reports
- Well-developed understanding of and experience in a law firm role providing research and company information to use in legal and business development activities
Preferred:
- Bachelor's degree

- Strong communication, both verbal and written, and presentation skills
- Ability to carry and achieve marketing and business development goals

- Ability to create, design, and explain impactful and dynamic reporting processes and documents
Cooley LLP offers a competitive compensation and excellent benefits program. EOE.
The expected annual pay range for this position with a work schedule of 40 hours per week is $85,000 - $120,000. Please note that final offer amount will be dependent on geographic location, applicable experience and skillset of the candidate. Senior level candidates may be considered for this position and would be eligible for a higher salary range based on experience.
