Tax Director

As a Tax Director at our well-established and highly profitable CPA firm, you will hold a pivotal role in steering our tax services and contributing to the strategic management of our firm. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Technical review and approval of complex tax returns and addressing any governmental tax examinations.
  • Acts as a subject-matter expert for specific tax disciplines or industries.
  • Ensuring quality client service and management of work within budgetary guidelines.
  • Oversees and takes full responsibility for larger tax returns, delegating tasks to tax preparers as necessary.
  • Leads client meetings and tax planning efforts, collaborating closely with the Audit and Assurance Department.
  • Serves as an on-call resource for tax preparers/specialists and Audit & Assurance staff regarding specific tax queries and issues.
  • Manages client service for a portfolio of clients and communicates key tax and related developments to relevant stakeholders within the firm.
  • Directs and oversees government tax examinations, representing clients before taxing authorities when required.
  • Monitors and reviews the qualifications and performance of the tax staff, ensuring appropriate assignments and fostering professional development.
  • Responsible for the timely and accurate billing and collection processes.
  • Maintaining comprehensive knowledge of the firm’s philosophy and its stance on tax matters.
  • Keeps up to date with general economic and political trends along with potential tax legislation that may affect the business environment.
  • Participates and contributes to firm’s practice development by building professional relationships with referral sources and participating in community and industry activities.
  • Responsible for directly developing the skills of senior and semi-senior staff accountants through coaching and training.
  • Involved in the strategic review and evaluation of the tax department’s performance.
  • Willingness for occasional travel for client meetings, seminars, and continuous professional development.
  • Prepared to work significant overtime during peak tax season (January 1 to April 15) which may exceed 55 hours per week.

Minimum Position Qualifications:

  • Seven to ten years of experience in public accounting with a demonstrated progression in tax complexity and scope.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience representing clients before taxing authorities.
  • At least one year of experience supervising and directing the work of tax preparers.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting is required.
  • A valid and current certified public accountant’s license.
  • Membership in good standing with the American Institute of CPAs.
  • Commitment to a minimum of forty hours of continuing education annually to maintain and develop technical and business skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in taxation.
