Liturgical Music Director

The Need:

The Mission and Ministry Center at Saint Mary's College is in need of a part-time Liturgical Music Director to assist in providing liturgical music oversight for weekly and special masses, as well as periodic prayer services during the academic year. The Director will be working in collaboration with - and will oversee - the Student Leaders for Liturgical Music and the Liturgical Choir. This is an ongoing 10 month commitment during the academic year (approximately 30 weeks). The Liturgical Music Director will start August 1, 2024. We need a trained and experienced musician and cantor to train and develop student musicians and cantors, and provide a liturgically sound music program that is appropriate for the age and experience of Saint Mary's College students.

Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and support student leader cantors and musicians professionally and musically
  2. Manage the rotating cantors and musicians to create a seamless liturgical musical program
  3. Oversee liturgical music student leaders (Student Leaders will work 5-6 hours per week - which includes practices, liturgies, and meetings)
    1. Lead weekly meetings
    2. Collaborate with student leaders to select music that is appropriate for the age and experience of Saint Mary's College students
    3. Develop students as leaders and professionals
  4. Direct the Liturgical Choir, during
    1. All student-led liturgies and prayer services
    2. Weekly practices
    3. Practices held immediately before liturgies and prayer services
  5. Able to step-in as cantor and/or musician for student-led liturgies and prayer services when needed
  6. Attend weekly 'Liturgy Team' meeting (if needed, remotely)
  7. Ensure music is prepared and accessible for all choir members
  8. Assist in keeping all music organized and up-to-date
  9. Meet with direct supervisor on a regular basis
  10. Report all music used for licensing purposes
  11. Ensure that all music for each liturgy and prayer service is placed into the appropriate worship aid and script
  12. Other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor

Requirements

  • Must have a proven previous record of being an engaging liturgical cantor and accompanist (piano preferred)
  • Must have extensive knowledge of Liturgical Music
  • Must be flexible, communicative, self-driven, and creative
  • Must have experience and knowledge of Google Workspace and OneLicense (or other reporting tool)
