Alphapointe, a Kansas City-area non-profit with a diverse business portfolio including a large manufacturing division, is currently searching for a Financial Controller to join its dynamic leadership team. This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer and is responsible for the accurate and timely recording of all corporate financial activities in compliance with financial regulations and accounting principles.

The ideal candidate should possess experience in the area of manufacturing, with additional experience in a non-profit organization preferred. Prior experience required as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or a Manager of a 3+ person accounting staff for at least 3 years. The candidate must also possess business and management skills involved in utilizing ERP systems, leadership, and budgeting. Excellent communication skills are required as well as a keen ability to analyze, coordinate, and prioritize multiple tasks with tight deadlines.

The position requires a bachelor’s degree with a major in accounting, business administration, or finance or an MBA. Job Summary : Responsible for the accurate and timely recording of all corporate financial activities in compliance with financial regulations and accounting principles.

Essential Functions:

  • Monitor staffing levels and work assignments to promote peak productivity, minimize overtime, and meet deadlines.
  • Work in conjunction with various internal departments to address business issues and support business improvement initiatives, including identifying and implementing continuous improvement processes.
  • Develop and maintain departmental financial budgets.
  • Ensure all systems, methods and procedures are in place to meet daily task requirements within the accounting and procurement departments.
  • Effectively communicate material business issues to executive level management to address timely.
  • Demonstrate and promote a strong and persistent attention to detail to one’s work, and to the work of those supervised.
  • Demonstrate and promote superior organization and leadership.
  • Execute timely and accurate monthly financial system closings, delivering ledgers and P&Ls of high integrity and completeness.
  • Apply GAAP and/or traditional accounting standards and practices to transaction accounting and recordkeeping.
  • Ensure that balance sheet accounts are accurately stated and properly supported by account reconciliations, roll forwards or similar information.
  • Monitor daily transaction flow to ensure that procedures are being followed and that any exceptions are being addressed and resolved in a timely fashion.
  • Provide exemplary leadership and mentoring to the billing, receivables, payables, and treasury functions and staff.
  • Oversee the payroll function.
  • Work cohesively with the CFO and Accounting personnel to facilitate an effective budget process and to ensure proper financial statement presentation, variance analysis, inventory cost accounting, and subsidiary financial management and reporting.
  • Train and supervise department personnel so each understands their functional, responsibility and performance expectations.
  • Develop staff to provide professional growth and promotion opportunities.
  • Satisfy all audit and compliance related document requests and support requirements.
  • Ensure that internal controls are adequate given the associated risk, complexity, and materiality of the matters.
  • Interface with Alphapointe departments and business lines to fulfill requests for information or for participation in certain business efforts or projects.
  • Demonstrate superior project management attributes to efficiently and expediently address those needs.
  • Oversee the management of diverse components of the Company’s treasury systems, including company credit cards, Concur expense reporting process, checks, ACHs and wires, and intracompany cash transfers ensuring Company assets are fully secured.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution with a major in accounting or finance or an MBA is required.
  • An advanced degree in accounting or finance or professional designation as a CPA or CMA is desirable.
  • Prior experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or a manager or supervisor of a 5+ person accounting staff for 3 to 10 years.
  • Possess business and management skills involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership.
  • Experience with both manufacturing and service businesses is highly preferred.
  • Experience with not-for-profit, inventory, and manufacturing is highly preferred.
  • Capacity to build relationships internally and externally.
  • Ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple priorities and tasks with tight deadlines, by utilizing project management/organizational/analytical skills while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Possess strong negotiation skills.
  • Possess strong communication skills to all levels within the organization and externally.
  • Advanced Excel skills: Vlookup, pivot tables, extracting and upload high volumes of data.

Additional Functions:

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:

  • This position will be principally an office-based position, with some opportunities to work from home.
  • Some travel is required to other Alphapointe locations, suppliers, and customers and for training and professional development.
  • Occasional lifting of “bankers boxes” of up to 25 pounds.
