POSITION SUMMARY: Performs a variety of venipuncture and skin puncture techniques which involves the collection of blood specimens and urine specimens from patients of all ages for laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Incumbents utilize Kedren's Laboratory Procedure Manual as guide to include all aspects of the venipuncture and urine specimen collection procedures including entering provider's order in EHR, drawing, labeling, handling, and transportation of specimen.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. A valid certificate to practice as a Certified Phlebotomist Technician
  2. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  3. Six months of experience as a Phlebotomist Technician, preferred
  4. Possess a thorough understanding of the importance of confidentiality and non-disclosure according to the general standards set forth by HIPAA.
  5. Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred.
  6. Valid California Driver's License, proof of personal liability auto insurance as required by California State Law, and ability to travel as required to perform essential duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Promotes the mission, vision, and values of the organization
  2. Identify patient by comparing patient information on the requisition and by soliciting name and date of birth from the patient. If patient is not able to provide identification, example a minor child/confused/disorganized patient, solicits information from parent, or legal guardian, assigned nurse, and or conservator
  3. Confirms patient's information in EHR or paper chart, verifying patient's insurance to use correct Laboratory-QUEST/LABCORP
  4. Calms and reassures patients who are anxious or apprehensive about having blood specimen drawn; explains to patient why specimen is needed in order to elicit cooperation.
  5. Prints labels with patient's information- full name, Provider's name, subscriber ID (Insurance ID)
  6. Demonstrates knowledge of color top tube to use, volume of blood needed, and test requirements
  7. Assembles testing equipment such as tourniquet, needles, disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol work on tray, according to requirements for specified test or procedures.
  8. Prepares specimens for reference laboratory by using centrifuge to spin blood
  9. Maintain work station well -organized, stocked, and clean at all times
  10. Follow standard precautions at all times when working with patients and equipment
  11. Prioritize STAT, URGENT, ROUTINE orders
  12. Carries or otherwise forwards all labeled blood specimens drawn to appropriate laboratory box located on East entrance of clinic for pick up from laboratory carrier.
  13. Corrects, clarifies test not performed (TNP) with laboratory when requested
  14. Checks out patient from EHR when completed with lab collection process
  15. Sort and route laboratory reports to patient's ward or clinics, as needed.
  16. Conduct non-technical duties which include order supplies as needed, taking of supply inventories, stocking supplies
  17. Check expired blood tubes and or supplies and document in Lab Verification Log monthly. Return all expired blood tubes to QUEST/LABCORP.
  18. Seeks guidance and direction when necessary
  19. Displays courteous, professional behavior toward patients, co-workers, nursing, and medical staff
EXPECTATIONS:
  1. Excellent communication skills at a quality level necessary for understanding supervisor's instructions.
  2. Ability to effectively communicate with patient population and staff while demonstrating a high degree of patient care.
  3. Beginner to intermediate computing and phone skills.
  4. Willingness to work evenings and/or weekends; demonstrates flexibility in regards to job duties and assignments.
  5. Ability to multi-task and work effectively in a high-stress and fast-moving environment.
  6. Culturally sensitive and demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with ethnically diverse populations.
  7. Working knowledge of "Universal Precautions" and "Standard Precaution"
  8. Possess a thorough understanding of the importance of confidentiality and non-disclosure according to the general standards set forth by HIPAA.
  9. Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred.
  10. Demonstrates professional behavior at all times
  11. Observes department guidelines to conduct personal business during breaks and lunch hour.
  12. Observes department guidelines to limit personal phone use and does not use the phone/computer for personal calls, internet search and email for personal use.
