The Voluntary Benefits Director leads the team, strategy and goals of our voluntary benefits solution. They ensure the team understands and is trained in best practices, provides strategic planning and implementation, and is accountable to the profitability and success of the team. They lead a team of Specialists who perform transactions and tasks essential to managing efficient insurance, benefit, and/or the voluntary benefits solution. The Voluntary Benefits Director collaborates with internal departments and leaders regarding process, operational, marketing, and production needs. Through managing their team, they find team efficiencies and create and maintain team processes to ensure the production teams engage with the voluntary benefit teams.

Vision and Strategy

  • Works with Employee Health and Benefits leaders to define and drive team vision and strategic and operational goals and drive associated project plans to successful completion.

  • Designs and executes projects, goals and other initiatives within context of our overall vision and strategy.

  • Communicates and understands company’s vision, core passion, value propositions and culture to reinforce decisions, processes and roles within context.

  • Serves as a member of the key management team by utilizing best practices and new ideas with others in the agency; shares ideas to maintain consistency across similar teams.


Thought Leadership

  • Operates as the agency technical expert regarding the voluntary benefits solution.

  • Is deeply and broadly involved in the industry through participation in external associations and events;

  • Manages, directs and continuously improves the execution of the service plan for the employee benefits voluntary benefits solutions team.

  • Establish and maintains relevant resources and process documents for the team.

  • Meets or exceeds established client service platform department performance metrics as designated by Senior Vice President, Client Services.

Vendor Management and Revenue Growth

  • Accountable for the contracts, splits, compensation, and vendor relationships related to the voluntary benefits solution.

  • Builds relationships with our enrollment firms and voluntary benefit carriers, and develops a deep understanding of what each can provide.

  • Supports and consults clients to find the right fit for voluntary benefit products based on their needs.

  • Responsible for the management and collection of commissions.

  • Manages the overall profitability of the book, provides strategy planning and processes to increase participation in cases, and reviews overall case financials for profitability.

  • Partners with producers to identify opportunities for new voluntary benefits solutions on current clients and prospects.

Build an Effective Team

  • Fosters innovative thinking and encourages team members to put forth and participate in new ideas to improve the team and the company.

  • Fosters working relationships among team members and others that demonstrate our best and brightest characteristics.

  • Recruits and hires new team members with appropriate skills, experience, traits and competencies by following MMA Midwest’s hiring and interviewing best practices.

  • Monitors staff workloads and determines appropriate assignment of responsibility.

  • Communicates with team members through regular meetings following MMA Midwest’s best practices, including information on company updates, team performance, and other information relevant to their roles.

  • Consistently uses the tools and follows best practices in our manager toolkit

Develop and Manage Direct Reports

  • Executes onboarding process, oversees training and education and introduces to team members to ensure a smooth transition for new employees; assigns mentors and coordinates on the job learning as necessary.

  • Conducts regular one-on-one meetings with all direct reports.

  • Coaches employees by providing methods and resources to finding answers when appropriate

  • Follows performance management process with direct reports on schedule, including individualized business and development goals developed in collaboration with each employee; fosters open communication on performance and accountability standards throughout the year.

  • Leads team members to achieving specific goals and objectives.

  • Appreciates individual accomplishments by utilizing recognition practices in a personalized way for each employee; share team success broadly and asks others to recognize as appropriate.

Required

  • Upon hire, Producers License for Health/Life

  • 10+ years of experience in a benefits related field

Preferred

  • BS/BA in Business, Insurance or related field

  • Insurance carrier or agency experience

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
