VRE is the place to be! Virginia Railway Express (VRE) is seeking a highly driven and experienced Systems Engineer to administer, enhance, and support our information technology systems. A key position in our Information Security & Technology (IST) Department, the Systems Engineer will support the IST Director in planning, developing, and administering IT strategies; to include network engineering, business application, database administration, security camera, and other Information and Operations technology systems to enhance efficiency and security; resolving escalated service issues; and coaching and guiding IST staff to resolutions.

What are we looking for? Competitive Systems Engineer candidates will be highly customer-oriented and can administer systems and deliver assignments and projects in a fast-paced environment that includes significant interface with internal customers, vendors, third-party contractors, and other stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology or related field
  • Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) or Microsoft Certified Azure Solutions Architect Expert (MCASAE)
  • Minimum of 5 years progressively responsible experience in systems engineering performing directly related work to include:
    • Deployment and administration of Desktop, mobile, and server platform operating systems, including Windows 10/11, Android, iOS, Mac OS, and Windows Server 2008 or later
    • Applications support for Microsoft 365, Office 365, SQL, and Azure Cloud services
    • Network system software, protocols, and standards, including Cisco Catalyst, and Meraki switches, routers, wireless access points, and network monitoring systems.
    • Backup and restoration systems for on premise and cloud endpoints
    • Enterprise Endpoint Protection systems such as Windows Defender
    • Deployment and management of Secure Socket Layer (SSL) certificates
    • Administration of hybrid configurations of Active Directory Domain, Active Directory Federation, Exchange, and Web Application Proxy services
    • Deployment and administration of SaaS, IaaS, and PaaS products
    • Deployment and management of Azure Cloud Services to include but not limited to Azure Active Directory, Compliance and Security, Endpoint Manager, Exchange, Sharepoint, Teams, Virtual Machines, Windows Defender, and Microsoft Sentinel
    • Mobile device management systems such as Mosyle and Microsoft InTune
    • Deployment and management of virtual servers using Microsoft’s Hyper-V technology and Azure’s Virtual Machine service
    • Storage Area Network (SAN) and Network Attached Storage (NAS) management
    • Documentation and maintenance of system configuration and process information
    • APC Power system hardware monitoring tools such as EcoStruxure IT

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP)
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
  • CompTIA A+
  • CompTIA Network+
  • CompTIA Security+
  • Railroad industry IT and OT systems such as fare collections, security camera, public messaging, and access control
  • Current cybersecurity systems software, protocols, and standards.
  • Disaster recovery experience
  • Experience prioritizing and managing complex and overlapping projects

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license, current auto insurance, and maintain a safe driving record at all times during employment with VRE.
  • Must be flexible and available to work outside of normal business hours in a dynamic commuter rail operating environment.
