Himed also serves as a contract research facility, providing analytical services and materials testing in our customized biomaterial laboratories. Our state-of-the art 25,000 sq. ft. facility is located in Old Bethpage, New York.


Position Overview

The Biomaterials Research Associate will design and carry out experiments with the goal of developing the next generation of products, and transferring them from the lab bench to the production scale.  They will also be responsible for the timely production of specialized materials, including smooth daily operations in the lab by tracking inventory and coaching lab assistants.  We specialize in calcium phosphate materials and ceramics for use in medical devices such as bone scaffolds, it is not a biology-focused position.  Calcium phosphates are used as coatings to improve biocompatibility, for bone graft substitutes, scaffolds and drug delivery.  They are manufactured by wet lab, high temperature and 3D printing techniques.


Position Responsibilities

  • Coordinate daily operation of the lab, including production of specialized new products that have not reached full-scale manufacturing, inventory of lab supplies and maintaining equipment
  • Work with the product development team to organize daily laboratory operations, leading weekly team meetings
  • Lead, train and mentor laboratory staff, encouraging them to grow and develop their technical skills
  • Collaborate with the engineering and manufacturing teams on product improvement projects and transitioning new products from the R+D to production scale 
  • Maintain careful and comprehensive records of all developments for the company’s intellectual intelligence database, in accordance with ISO 13485:2016
  • Write strong technical reports and deliver effective presentations on experimental data and supporting quality documentation
  • Inspiration to identify potential new products, for example from the scientific literature, and test them in the lab


Minimum Qualification

  • An undergraduate degree is necessary for this role, and ideally 2-3+ years of experience in Chemistry, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, etc.  
  • Demonstrable technical problem solving skills and creativity with excellent laboratory skills 
  • Strong organizational skills with an attention to detail
  • Team player with great leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Successful track record in new product development would be an asset
  • Experience in ceramics, bone scaffolding materials, XRD is preferable, however, not directly mandatory
