Summary:

The Senior Underwriter - Capital Partnerships supports the Director of Strategic Capital Partnerships and is responsible for the movement and coordination of loans across bridge-to-agency and expanding strategic capital distribution platforms.

The role is responsible for loan sizing, underwriting, and recommendations to BWE’s Credit Committee. The Senior Underwriter will review initial loan submissions completed by BWE production offices, provide guidance regarding underwriting requirements, issue applications, and prepare final underwriting and mortgage loan submissions in concert with the originating production office.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Preliminary screening and structuring of bridge-to-agency and other lending platform opportunities across all asset classes.
  2. Support the Director of Strategic Capital Partnerships to provide well-founded advice of strategic capital investor solutions to help clients achieve financing objectives within investor credit risk appetite.
  3. Provide analytical support for platform loan origination including preliminary credit memos, preparation of quotes, applications, and other transaction related material.
  4. Assist with maintenance of program pipeline reports.
  5. Maintain understanding of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac multi-family standards and processes.
  6. Establish underwriting timeline in conjunction with the Director of Strategic Capital, Producer, and Closing Manager.
  7. Conduct a critical review and analysis of the appraisal, including a review of the market analysis, property description, real estate tax analysis, zoning analysis, and comparable properties.
  8. Conduct due diligence review of issues relating to the property’s market, location, condition, borrower and principal’s mortgage credit issues, property management and other issues relevant to risks identified in items collected from the borrower’s checklist.
  9. Conduct site inspections, lease audits, and market analysis for transactions underwritten.
  10. Oversee generation of borrower’s checklist and all forms for the proper product type and introduce borrower to the information requirements.
  11. Summarize assigned transactions by preparing a presentation for the Loan Committee.
  12. Conduct a critical review and analysis of the engineering report and environmental reports plus additional reports included as part of the underwriting including, seismic studies, market studies, etc., as appropriate.
  13. Solicit bids and engage contractors selected for the necessary third-party reports for the underwriting process (e.g., appraisal, environmental, engineering).
  14. May have supervisory responsibilities for Analyst Associates.

Minimum Requirements:

  1. 5+ years of experience in a commercial real estate mortgage lending.
  2. Bachelor’s degree in Real Estate or Finance, or equivalent education and related training.
  3. An advanced degree is a plus.
  4. Understanding of Agency lending standards required.
  5. Bridge, life company, or debt fund originations experience preferred.
  6. Strong analytical skills as well as ability to think outside the box and provide solutions and optionality.
  7. In-depth knowledge of income producing real estate including knowledge of local/regional/national real estate markets, real estate construction, and all forms of debt and equity and their common structures.
  8. Ability to evolve with the changing environment and capital markets.
  9. Excellent organizational skills and drive to succeed.
  10. Ability to organize, direct and motivate others.
  11. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
  12. Maturity and self-confidence to simultaneously handle a variety of assignments.
  13. Ability to work harmoniously with internal/external workers/customers.
  14. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  15. Proven self-starter.
  16. Demonstrated proficiency in basic computer applications, such as Microsoft Office software products.
  17. Ability to travel; occasionally overnight.
  18. Prior history of working in a high-volume, fast-paced, loan production office preferred.
  19. Strong relationship management skills required.
  20. Sales and/or marketing training a plus.
