Summary
This position requires a thorough knowledge of jail procedures. The Corrections Officer has daily contact with the public and is responsible for the general supervision, safety, and security of inmates and the facility as assigned, in his/her duty station. The Corrections Officer is responsible for the preparation of booking data, incident, and other prisoner-related reports.

Mandatory Qualifications
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED equivalent is required. One (1) year of experience is desirable. Must pass: written test; agility test, criminal history background check, drug screen, physical exam and psychological exam.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION
Must have a valid Texas driver's license; certification as a Jailer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) is required within the first year of hire; must meet the minimum standards for enrollment and initial licensure with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. Must successfully complete and pass the Comal County Sheriff's Office Physical Readiness Testing Program.
Desired Minimum Qualifications
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fraction, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
The individual should possess a thorough working knowledge of jail procedures and practices. One (1) year of experience is desirable. Other specialized job requirements include fingerprinting and computer use.

Physical assessments are required twice a year to ensure employees possess the physical capability of performing job related tasks while providing services to Comal County and the citizens of Comal County.

- Booking and processing of incoming and outgoing prisoners.
- Feeding prisoners.
- Supervising the daily cleaning of the facility.
- Maintaining jail security.
- Responding to and reporting of incidents within the jail.
- Classifying prisoners as required.
- Taking fingerprints.
- Moving prisoners throughout the facility.
- Logging and writing incident reports.
- Handles violent inmates, to include physical confrontation.
- Handles intoxicated and/or prisoners under the influence of drugs or other substances.
- Handles mentally ill prisoners.
- Observes suicidal inmates and responds to suicide attempts and medical emergencies.
- Responds to fire alarms, fights fires and evacuates prisoners in a safe, secure manner.
- Conducts headcounts and security checks as required.
- Attendance is an essential function of the job.
