Job Summary
In consultation with the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) Program Manager, the MSTP Program Assistant uses professional concepts to coordinate, track and report student progress and assist with event coordination and logistics.
The MSTP Program Assistant applies professional Student Services concepts, provides varied student services to students, faculty, and department / school / college management. Works on moderately complex issues. Receives assistance on more complex issues.
The MSTP Program Assistant involves a range of student services duties and responsibilities for an academic department. Provides assistance to the program manager, faculty directors, faculty, and students in recruitment, admissions, student orientation and events, and related programs.
The position must be able to work independently and will report to the MSTP Program Manager. MSTP is a dual degree (MD/PhD) training program with approximately 100 students and works collaboratively with 9 PhD programs and the UCSF School of Medicine. The incumbent will assist the Program Manager with day-to-day operations including support to admissions & recruitment, courses, curricular events such as journal club and seminars, student tracking, training grant, event planning, reimbursements and program listservs, contact lists and websites.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
The salary range for this position is $29.05 - $53.50 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description
The Graduate Medical Sciences Unit (GMU) provides centralized financial management, reporting and oversight over the Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Graduate Program, the Developmental Stem Cell Biology (DSCB) Graduate Program, the Neuroscience Graduate Program, the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), the PROPEL Post-Baccalaureate Program and the CIRM Training Program.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Minimum of 1 year of administrative experience.
- Ability to work in diverse groups, including but not limited to students, staff, faculty, general public, and UCSF and external vendors.
- Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
- Solid communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, faculty and students verbally and in writing.
- Solid organizational skills and ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
- Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs.
- Knowledge of department, organization, and University policies, procedures, and directives.
- Knowledge of department and school / college general and major course requirements.
- Prior experience with undergraduate or graduate level curricular affairs.
- Prior event planning experience.
