Job Summary
The Accounting Manager’s primary responsibility is to direct and manage the corporate and retail accounting and centralized accounts payable departments of the credit union. Ensures all practices and activities in the Accounting functions are in compliance with state and federal rules and regulations. Manages auditing, accounting, and recordkeeping activities of the credit union to ensure they meet generally accepted accounting practices (GAAP).
Makes recommendations relating to accounting operational changes as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Directly, or through subordinates, oversees and manages the accounting functions of the credit union: AP, AR, ACH, budget analysis, GL, financial reporting and recordkeeping and employee payroll, wire transfers, share draft processing, external payroll. Responsible for reconciliations for all general ledger accounts. All reconciling items must be researched and cleared out within 30 days of occurrence unless well documented and approved by VP-Controller or CFO.
- Ensures all fixed asset, prepaid, and other subsidiary records are kept up to date.
- Coordinates activity to perform monthly close in the GL package and uploads information to the ALM package. Balances reports from Core for upload to the ALM package.
- Closes the books and prepares monthly financial, board, and budget/comparison and variance reports that will be presented to the Board of Directors and Senior Management.
- Manages Member Core GL setup to assist staff in posting and to reflect correct information is imported into GL package.
- Manages and troubleshoots all accounts payable for the credit union.
- Submission of employee payroll, retirement contributions, taxes to the appropriate vendors and regulating officials.
- Ensures that accounting-related policies and procedures reflect current regulations and are communicated to and implemented by subordinates. Makes recommendations for policy changes and ensures procedures affected by policy changes are implemented.
- Assists in preparing the annual budget. Maintains budget spreadsheets to assure all budget variances and non-budgeted items are accounted for.
- Responsible for the preparation and submission of the credit union’s 5300 Call Report.
- Ensures that all credit union file maintenance reports are reviewed as required.
- Responsible for all vendor management relationships as assigned.
- Serves as the credit union accounting liaison with regulatory agency examiners and auditors.
- Reviews areas of accounting risk management and recommends operational procedural changes for efficiencies.
- Responsible for tax filings, including but not limited to 990, Property Tax reporting, Form 945 reporting, FR2910 Federal Reserve reporting and other city/government reporting related items.
- Manage Staff: Conducts periodic staff meetings. Identify areas for improvement, changes in procedures, new developments, or changes in services. Keep staff up to date on trends and general credit union information. Keep procedures updated.

QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION:
- B.S. degree in Accounting (Masters in Accounting, CPA or MBA desirable).
OTHER:
- Ten (10) years or more of accounting and or financial management experience within a financial institution preferably within a credit union or bank.
- Team builder within staff and Board of Directors.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Good organizational and leadership skills.
- Excellent analytical skills.
- Detail-oriented.
- Ability and willingness to make non-routine decisions.
