HD Biosciences Inc. , a WuXi AppTec company, offers biology-focused preclinical drug discovery services to biotech and pharmaceuticals. We provide our clients with comprehensive service platforms around target validation, plate-based pharmacology, hit identification and lead discovery, in vivo pharmacology, as well as other research and development services.

The Associate Director should have deep and broad expertise in in vitro biology, disease-relevant in vitro models to support from early target validation to SAR exploration, and cell science including cell line engineering and iPSC. The Associate Director will lead a team at the San Diego site to provide scientific services and solutions to our customers’ drug discovery research needs.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and lead the in vitro Biology scientific team to execute a variety of scientific projects to ensure successful execution of projects and best quality services.
  • Build and grow a high-performance in vitro Biology team, providing effective mentorship and performance management.
  • Assist senior leaders in the delivery of financial and productivity goals.
  • Provide scientific direction and strategy to identify and implement emerging key technologies to expand service capabilities and fulfill customer needs in cutting-edge drug discoveries.
  • Coordinate efforts and facilitate communication to ensure alignment between different units and our customers.
  • Support and participate in business development activities to promote services and engage new customers.
  • Ensure operational compliance with EHS rules and government regulations for all members of the in vitro Biology team. Perform job-specific tasks in compliance with applicable regulations, international standards, and WuXi AppTec policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • May be required to assist in other departments.

Qualifications

Experience / Education

  • Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, or related field with a minimum of 6-10 years of Biotech/Pharmaceutical/CRO working experience.
  • Experience leading and managing teams.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  • Demonstrated broad expertise in various in vitro biology areas.
  • Expertise with cellular models using human PBMC and whole blood for autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases research.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in target discovery, oncology, and immunology.
  • Familiarity with genome editing using CRISPR for cell engineering and extensive experience in iPSC & ESC research.
  • Knowledge of in vitro pharmacology including assay development, validation, and compound screening.
  • Experience managing teams, including junior scientists and research associates. Demonstrated ability to guide groups through team change and growth.
  • Strong communication skills with collaborators and clients, and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals.
  • Ability to work effectively in team settings, building collaborative relationships with customers, management, and peers from diverse backgrounds.
  • Thorough understanding of Good Laboratory Practices and Good Manufacturing Practices.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work in an office environment with minimal noise conditions.
  • Must be able to work in a lab setting with exposure to animals/biohazards/chemicals.
  • Must not have animal allergies to applicable species in this facility.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE.
  • Must be able to work in an environment with variable noise levels.
  • Ability to stand/sit/walk for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lift 10 lbs routinely.
  • Ability to crouch, bend, twist, and reach.
  • Ability to push/pull 10 lbs routinely/often/occasionally.
  • Clarity of vision.
  • Ability to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Must be able to perform activities with repetitive motions.

Anticipated base pay range: $152,000 - 182,000
