Job Description
Purpose:
Under the direction of manager/supervisor, work as lead/bench technologist in core laboratory (Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology and specimen processing) and responsible for but not limited to; bench work, supervision of test performance by testing personnel, inventory management, staff scheduling, rotation weekends/shifts, laboratory maintenance, problem solving/reporting it to management and or other assigned tasks required for patient safety/optimal patient care and smooth operations. Collaborates with other sections and other areas within institution to provide highest quality of care.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
The Clinical Laboratory Technologist is charged with and responsible for:
1. Following laboratory's pre-analytic and analytic procedures and maintaining records of tests, maintaining records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens. Perform patient testing and adhering to the laboratory's quality assurance procedures, including documenting all quality control activities, instrument and equipment verifications, maintenance and preventive maintenance, following the laboratory's policies and procedures whenever test systems are not with the laboratory's established performance specifications, identifying and documenting problems that may adversely affect test performance, and notifying the supervisor, assistant director(s) or director and documenting all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications. Receives/handles/in-lab/label specimens, ensures integrity, transcribes requisitions/orders if required, prints labels, separate and prioritize specimens for analyses, preservation and storage and distribution to other section, reference laboratory/send out as appropriate and required. Ensure data integrity (generating, transforming, maintaining and assuring accuracy, completeness and consistency of data for a specimen inclusive all information collected, and data generated, to produce a test result.) Follows standard precautions, laboratory safety/infection control protocols, use appropriate PPE, clean or decontaminate bench surfaces or equipment and does documentation as appropriate. Receives/issues/quarantines blood and blood products, resolves discrepancies, request specimens from floors/unit for further workup as required. Perform ABO Grouping & Rh Typing, Direct Antiglobulin Testing, Antibody Screen Testing, Antibody identification, Fetal Bleed Screen Testing, Antigen Typing, Antibody Elution and Crossmatch Testing, Donor Unit Retyping, transfusion Reaction Work-Up and other tests as required under the scope of testing and training/competency. Receives and issues blood products, handle and preserve specimens according to requirements.
2. Supervising testing personnel, monitoring and ensuring that acceptable performance specifications are maintained, including review of quality control, scheduled instrument and equipment maintenance and other quality assurance activities as assigned. Ensuring test system performance by initiating preventive and/or remedial actions when test procedures deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications and in the vent of nonconformances, ensuring that test results are not reported until corrective action has been taken and the test is performing according to laboratory established performance specifications. Verifying that personnel are trained and deemed proficient prior to performing testing on patient specimens independently, ensuring that staff have competency assessments as needed and ensuring action is taken when personnel do not perform as expected on competency assessments.
3. Complies with patient confidentiality/safety/privacy/HIPPA and PHI rule, maintains standards of care, work on laboratory goals to prioritize patient safety/care, respond to inquiries courteously/accurately/timely and provide only necessary information admissible under rules to providers. Promote safe, cooperative and professional health care environment for patient/public health safety, optimal patient care, best laboratory practices, rules/regulations and demonstrates standards of performance and behaviors consistent with timely clock in and clock out, schedule breaks, cell phone use, dress code/rules of conduct. Coordinate department staffing/scheduling to ensure adequate shift/skill coverage and maintains laboratory/compliance records. Ensures adequate operating supplies, appropriate inventory management, specimen handling and management including all pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical processing, recording/tracking of specimens, monitors/checks and document environmental conditions, physically inspect reagents, controls, calibrators/other supplies, checks lot number and expiration dates and does require documentation. Ensure Shift to shift communication to staff/supervisors about pending tasks and ongoing compliance to avoid safety/patient care issues. Assist in staff hires/training, performance appraisals and ensure tasks are timely completed. Knowledgeable about SOP(s) relevant to scope of services. Keeps self-abreast of knowledge/developments in laboratory medicine and compliance with continuing education requirements. Minimum Qualifications
1. Valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist, cytotechnologist, or histotechnologist issued by the NYSED.
For Appointment to Levels IV and V
1. In addition to meeting the qualification requirement of Assignment Level II, candidates must also meet one of the qualification requirements of a laboratory supervisor as outlined in Title 10, Section 58-1.4 of the New York Public Health Law.
Department Preferences
- In-depth knowledge of laboratory medicine, operations, workflow, laboratory equipment and biosafety protocols. Proficient in laboratory information systems and other relevant software/middleware applications.
- Thorough knowledge of quality assurance, quality control standards and working with hazardous and potentially infectious materials and the appropriate precautions to take to avoid infection.
- Effectively perform the function of a lead technologist/assistant supervisor in the core laboratory and blood banking and or willing to be trained in other areas where a complete training is missing.
- Must be able to manage the area in the absence of a supervisor, demonstrate professional behavior, help and support the staff, address the issues, Commitment to continuous learning/professional development and work under pressure and handle multiple tasks simultaneously. A combination of technical, operational and strong leadership and management skills to effectively supervise and motivate laboratory staff. Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in performing laboratory tests and procedures.
- Must have excellent communication and interpersonal to collaborate effectively with healthcare professionals, communicate issues to the staff and management, promote a just culture and prioritize facility goals of patient care and ICARE model of the organization.
- Must have good analytical and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot issues and ensure quality control.
