Job Description

Primary Purpose: Position requires an individual that is well experienced in engineering design for their specific discipline as well as other disciplines associated with a project. The individual possesses a unique set of skills developed through years of experience in the engineering design business. Responsibilities go beyond preparation of deliverables, supporting design activities, supervising and finalizing engineering configurations, requirements, and deliverables. Reviews general project objectives, definition of scope, and development of concepts. The individual develops and monitors project control systems including schedules, man-day budgets, lists, and bill of materials. Supervises an assigned staff of engineering technicians and support personnel. Determines staffing needs and work assignments, performs personnel appraisals, work reviews, and assists the staff with goal setting. Makes decisions that directly affect the success of the project. Working knowledge of other engineering disciplines is required for coordinating with other departments, engineering managers, field personnel, and clients. This knowledge is applied in reviewing designs and resolving areas of concern.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities: This Network Architect will be responsible for network architecture design and planning for Smart Grid utility clients. This includes creating design sketches, implementation, and preliminary support of IP Private Networks.

1. Communicating directly with clients (sometimes non-technical clients) to identify current and future communication needs.
2. Creating master communication plans to meet those client needs and receive buy-in from the client.
3. Collaborate with and/or delegate responsibilities to a team of engineers.
4. Assess industry standards for models, and where appropriate, incorporate them into our architecture standards.
5. Participates as technical lead on major projects and application roll-outs.
6. Responsible for completing and adhering to all Team processes and procedures and all documentation/tools.
7. Strong on documentation and processes.
8. Capable of optimizing day-to-day operational stability with the continual need to improve the service and deploy new services, processes, and technologies.
9. Create or expand utility communication systems.
10. Understands, advocates, and supports IT strategies.
11. Mentors others on the Telecommunication team.

Minimum Qualifications:

• 15 years experience in IT industry.
• In-depth knowledge of MPLS networks including experience in designing and/or support.
• IP networking background focused on service provider or carrier routing and switching.
• Excellent interpersonal, oral/presentation, and written communication skills in both technical and non-technical language.
• Up-to-date, broad knowledge in all current communications and computing technologies and trends.

Preferred Job Qualifications:

• Experience in Engineering support or utility IT environment.
• DWDM conceptual understanding.
• BS degree in Engineering, Computer Science, MIS, or related technical field.
• Cisco CCIE/CCDA certifications are desired, other certifications are a plus.
