Position Description
ERT is seeking a Software Engineer to support operations at the NOAA Environmental Satellite Processing Center. Responsible for ensuring reliable operation of the systems that decode the data coming from weather satellites, make images, and perform scientific analyses to create higher-level products. The engineer will make weather products available to National Weather Services (NWS) local forecast offices, NWS supercomputers running advanced numerical models, and a host of other users. The role involves close collaboration with operational analysts, support programmers, and government leads. Responsibilities include developing enhancements to satellite data pre and post processing using Python, Fortran, and Perl programming languages, migrating code to Python, updating GUI analysis software by adding new products and revising views, and developing methods to improve monitoring, error reporting, and automated error mitigation.

Required Skills

  • 6 years of experience in software development/engineering.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in Unix/Linux, Bash shell.
  • Experience in Perl, Python, Java.
  • Knowledge of Jira, SubVersion tools.
  • Familiarity with Full Software Development Cycle.
  • Knowledge of satellite ground systems processing.
  • Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize while working on multiple projects simultaneously.

Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident who has lived in the United States at least 3 out of the last 5 years and be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to access applicable government facilities and systems.

Desired Skills

  • Knowledge of HTML, JavaScript.
  • Knowledge of IDL/ENVi based interactive analysis system.
  • Familiarity with scientific data formats and Meteorological data formats.
  • Working experience using Agile methodology.
  • Working experience in Cloud platforms.
  • Experience working with NOAA/NESDIS is a plus.

Education
BS in physical sciences, engineering, computer science, related discipline or equivalent.

Location
Work will be completed on-site at the NOAA Environmental Satellite Processing Center in College Park, MD with the option for 2 days of telework/week.

Salary
The salary range for this role is $62,000 - $275,000/year. This range is a good faith estimate based on similar roles across the organization. ERT uses several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the position's scope and expected duties, a candidate’s work experience, education/training, and key skills.
