General Description and Classification Standards

Performs preventative maintenance and repairs on mechanical equipment in the maintenance of buildings, grounds and utility systems of plants.

This is an experienced level position whose duties may include, but are not limited to: plumbing, welding and maintaining machinery and mechanical equipment such as engines, motors, pneumatic tools, chemical feeders, chlorinators, control units, pumps, water tanks and other production equipment using hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring and testing instruments in accordance with diagrams, sketches, operation manuals and manufacturer's specifications.

Supervision Received

Works under direct supervision and follows standardized procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. May perform other duties as assigned.

  • Maintains in accordance with diagrams, sketches, operation manuals and manufacturer's specifications, machinery and mechanical equipment such as engines, motors, pneumatic tools, chemical feeders, chlorinators, control units, pumps, water tanks, screens and other production equipment using hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring and testing instruments; adjusts functional parts of devices; identifies equipment maintenance needs; records mechanical equipment readings; lubricates and clean parts.
  • Repairs and troubleshoots equipment; observes mechanical devices in operation to locate causes of trouble; dismantles devices to gain access to repair or replaces defective parts using hoists, cranes, hand tools and power tools; repairs electrical equipment; welds and uses cutting torches; Performs routine mechanical, electrical, welding, or machining maintenance activities on equipment including lubrication, inspection, and replacement parts; order and maintains stock levels of lubricants used in plant equipment.
  • Conducts performance tests of plant equipment using tachometers, pressure gauges, flow meter, amp and volt meters.
  • Diagnoses, troubleshoots, updates and repairs malfunctioning plant equipment; maintains, repairs and overhauls treatment plant equipment including aeration blowers, barminutors, pumps and motors, compressors, belt press, valves, drive units, hydraulic control units, chlorinators, chemical feeders, pneumatic equipment and hydraulic pressure systems.
  • Participates in the installation of wastewater treatment plant equipment; participates in making modifications to equipment for maximum treatment process performance.
  • Performs pipefitting; install and repair air, sewer and hydraulic piping systems. Maintains efficient records on operations and activities; maintains plant safety records; maintains and record shipping and receiving of parcels; prepare a variety of reports on data; maintains records of plant function readings and equipment history; maintains preventative maintenance records and schedules.
  • Ensures and adheres to safe work practices and procedures including, but not limited to lockout/tag out and confined space rules and regulations.
  • Interprets drawings, blueprints, schematics and diagrams for a variety of wastewater systems.
  • Operates a variety of heavy equipment including loaders, backhoe, bull dozers, cranes, forklifts, and graders as necessary.
  • Initiates purchase orders for parts and equipment.

  • Knowledge of: methods and techniques of maintaining and repairing wastewater plant equipment, machinery and related facilities; of lubricants used in plant equipment; of electrical codes; of the fundamentals of pipefitting and fabrication; of programmable logic controls, telemetry units and fiber optics; of operational characteristics of maintenance equipment and tools; of occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Skill in: the use of office equipment including computers and supporting software applications.
  • Ability to: preventative maintenance tasks on plant equipment, machinery and related facilities; to operate a variety of maintenance equipment in a safe and effective manner; to read, interpret and understand technical manuals, blueprints, drawings, and diagrams; maintain detailed records and prepare clear and concise reports.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • 1-3 years' of increasingly responsible experience in maintaining and repairing water/wastewater plant equipment.
  • Senior Qualifications : 3+ years of experience.

Preferred Education & Experience

  • Completion of technical or vocational course of study in mechanics or a related field, or associates degree in the appropriate area
  • 1 year of increasingly responsible experience in maintaining and repairing water/wastewater plant equipment.

Licensure and Certifications

  • Mech-Tech License preferred
  • Water Distribution or Backflow License preferred.
