POSITION SUMMARY:
Good Shepherd Center is seeking a Senior Development Director to lead the organization’s fundraising activities. The successful candidate will play a critical role in furthering our mission of feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, and fostering transition to housing. This role is accountable for achieving the fundraising goals by growing institutional and individual contributions, by managing key donor relationships, and by leading events. Additionally, this position will initially play a supporting role in fundraising for Good Shepherd Center’s recently launched capital campaign, Home for Good: A Campaign for Permanent Solutions .
Importantly, the successful candidate is not only passionate about our mission but also dedicated to becoming well-versed in our educational messaging around Best Practice emergency services delivery and housing efforts to end homelessness. Providing current and prospective supporters with tours of our programs, such as our shelters and soup kitchen, and being at ease in minor day-to-day interactions with the individuals we serve, will be part of the regular work experience. A deeply felt concern for the experiences of the poor, and their right to an improved quality of life, will inform the efforts of the successful candidate in inspiring others to become supporters and champions of our work.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Lead the creation of a fundraising strategy and create the plans that will ensure that GSC's fundraising goals are achieved through multiple fundraising approaches/channels that reach a diversity of donors including, but not limited to, individual donors, planned giving, foundations, fundraising events, direct mail, online giving, and corporate campaigns, etc. Actively solicit and close gifts at the major gift level from a portfolio of current and prospective donors. Continually identify and qualify major gift prospects. Create a holistic annual plan, defining revenue and activity goals and monthly metrics including a fundraising plan for prospects giving <$5,000, to be managed by the Development Coordinator. Build and execute a fund development strategy and plan to support GSC’s Strategic Plan. Advise the Executive Director on relationship building and fundraising opportunities that are strategic and of the highest priority and ensure that the ED’s time is scheduled effectively in fundraising and donor cultivation processes and events. Evaluate the fundraising activities annually to ensure quality, productivity, and relevance towards meeting goals. Maintain a portfolio of top corporate, foundation, leadership and donor prospects; develop and implement strategies for engagement in GSC’s activities and increased giving. Keep the Board informed of Philanthropy team activities; provide data relevant to tracking fundraising progress and planning. Closely mentor staff and support team to ensure professional development and expansion of roles. Complete all non-governmental grant writing for the organization. Serve as a passionate and informed advocate for GSC. Clearly communicate the impact of GSC’s work, verbally and in writing, throughout corporate and community networks. Develop and cultivate a culture of Philanthropy within all GSC constituencies including employees, volunteers, clients, and donors.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Minimum of 8-10 years in fundraising for nonprofit organizations with demonstrated results in leadership and major and principal gifts. Proven experience in leading people and managing systems to achieve fundraising goals and substantial increases in revenue while cultivating a work culture that is high performing, developmental, innovative, creative, inspiring, and fun. Outstanding organizational skills to operationalize a strategic fundraising plan by identifying goals and objectives and specific actions to achieve them, setting priorities, delegating actions to team members, and influencing upward and laterally to ensure that key actions in the plan are executed by all needed stakeholders including the Executive Director. Ability to evaluate results and adapt plan, as needed, to improve future performance. Comfortable building relationships with corporate and foundation leaders, high net-worth individuals, and community leaders and with making high dollar “asks”. Experience developing and managing departmental budgets. Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities simultaneously and delegate appropriately to ensure that all goals are being met. Experienced team player in a high-performing, collaborative leadership team. Demonstrate respect for the contributions of others. Able to build cooperative relationships with peers, share knowledge, learn from others, and contribute to team and organizational goals in addition to individual achievements. History of working effectively with all people irrespective of their history, economic status, challenges, race, gender, educational level, or sexual orientation. Reflect a value for the importance of diversity and have experience in creating and/or working in diverse organizations. Excellent written and oral communication and networking skills with the ability to engage, inspire and educate in personal meetings, group settings and in written form. Energetic, diplomatic, adaptable and with a good sense of humor. Passionate about the mission, vision, and goals of GSC and possess an understanding of how this position contributes to the organization’s success. Brings humility and a deep commitment to philanthropy and empathy. Proficient in MS Office applications; working knowledge of Salesforce software highly desirable. COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
Compensation is $80,000 - $95,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
Employee benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance, three (3) weeks of paid vacation, twelve (12) days of sick leave, twelve (12) paid holidays, and participation in GSC’s SEP-IRA.

BACKGROUND:
Founded in 1983, Good Shepherd has grown to become the largest provider of services to the hungry and homeless in the Cape Fear region. Programs and services include a soup kitchen, food salvage program, day and night shelters, on-site medical clinic, case management and counseling, and Permanent Supportive Housing for chronically homeless persons with disabilities, including homeless Veterans. The organization has 35 part- and full-time staff and more than 500 volunteers. Good Shepherd has worked diligently and intentionally to move beyond serving merely as a safety net for hungry and homeless guests, devoting equal time and resources to transitioning our guests back to housing and stability in the community.
