Summary
The Pharmacy Tech II will have responsibilities which require some professional judgment and problem-solving skills, as well as more complex day- to- day functions. The Tech II performs daily dispensing duties that were previously only performed by Pharmacist, thus allowing the Pharmacist more time to perform clinical duties.
Responsibilities
(25%) Staffs Home Infusion Pharmacy.
(25%) Enters demographics and orders into the computer in an accurate and timely manner.
(25%) Completes monthly stock inventory; orders needles, syringes, etc. from purchasing and stocks.
(25%) Answers phone and other duties as directed by the pharmacist on duty.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Compounds IV and piggyback medications, TPNs, and narcotic drips.
Co mplete prior authorization and verification of benef i ts.
Also makes all biohazard IVs, including Gammimune, Remicade, etc. using aseptic technique and universal precautions.
Follows USP 797 guidelines.
Qualified to receive verbal orders by phone directly from physicians or nurses, including "NOW" and "STAT" orders. May answer common IV compatibility questions under the direction of the pharmacist on duty.
Determines which calls need to be referred to Pharmacist. Special projects as needed.
Able to trouble shoot all equipment, e.g., computers, printers, and the TPN compounder.

PHARM TECH: Pharmacy Technician Licensure
New hire and transfers before October 1, 2015 must possess a full technician license or limited pharmacy license through the state of Michigan. Effective October 1, 2015, all incumbents, new hires and transfers to this position must possess a pharmacy technician temporary, limited or full license through the state of Michigan Individuals with a temporary license must obtain a full license through the state of Michigan within 365 days of obtaining the temporary license.
Required Education
High school diploma or GED is required

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:
One (1) year Hospital Pharmacy experience preferred.
Extensive IV compounding experience and precision; work independently and follow through on problems; knowledge of chemo guidelines, maximum dosages and ancillary labels and knowledge of universal precautions for biohazard preparations preferred.
Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
Mandatory tuberculosis (TB) testing must be done as required.
Mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training must be completed annually according to the Exposure Control Plan. Must pass OIG background check annually per Medicare Part D requirements.
Home Infusion experience preferred.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
