We are looking for a Staff Engineer with expertise in AMO physics and product development experience in industry. As a Staff Engineer, you’ll be part of an interdisciplinary team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems. In this role, you’ll lead the system design, integration, and performance characterization of IonQ’s next-generation trapped-ion quantum computers.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the subsystem development and integration of quantum computers by collaborating with the engineering and software teams.
  • Define requirements and specifications for software and control systems.
  • Measure and analyze data on the performance of a trapped ion quantum computer.
  • Mentor physicists and engineers in taking assembled hardware from the initial stages of ion trapping to coherent gate operations.

You’d be a good fit with:

  • PhD in Physics or Electrical Engineering specializing in AMO physics or quantum information.
  • 5+ years post-PhD experience working in industry or national labs.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

You’d be a great fit with:

  • 7+ years post-PhD experience working in industry or national labs.
  • Engineering or systems engineering experience in transforming a complex physical system into a product.
  • Experience in developing calibration routines for performance optimization of quantum computers.
  • Proficient in developing RF trap waveforms for coherent shuttling of ions.

Location: This role will work onsite at our office located in Bothell, WA.

The approximate base salary range for this position is $133,046 - $174,192. The base pay component of the offer will vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Posted figures are subject to change as new market data becomes available. Beyond base pay, total compensation includes a variable bonus and equity component, as well as a range of benefit options found on our site at ionq.co/jobs.
