Boston University (BU) seeks an outstanding individual with exceptional academic, strategic, and interpersonal capabilities to join the University’s senior academic leadership team in the role of the Associate Provost for Graduate Affairs. The Associate Provost for Graduate Affairs is the senior officer with responsibility for assuring that BU provides a high-quality graduate education and a supportive environment for our graduate students that is aligned with the aspirational goals in the University’s strategic plan.

Reporting to the University Provost and Chief Academic Officer, the Associate Provost will provide central leadership for the University’s graduate education initiatives, working closely with the University’s schools and colleges to support interdisciplinary and co-curricular education and research, increase graduate student access to a wider variety of interdisciplinary programs, and foster greater collaboration between the Charles River campus and Medical Center campus graduate programs. This individual will be responsible for:

  1. Curriculum management and development and review of new and existing graduate programs;
  2. Creating systems for accountability, access, and inclusion;
  3. Promoting interdisciplinary graduate education and research programs;
  4. Facilitating University Fellowships programs;
  5. Assisting with the recruitment and retention of a diverse pool of graduate students;
  6. Overseeing a comprehensive graduate professional development program;
  7. Articulating and creating an institutional vision structured around graduate education.

The Associate Provost will work with members of the BU academic community to promote BU’s graduate strengths externally.

Required Skills

The successful candidate for this position will be a strategic leader, as well as a creative and innovative builder and collaborator. They will have: a history of accomplishment in developing new and growing existing graduate programs; proven experience with innovative uses of educational technology; the ability to develop, refine, and maintain systems in a higher education environment; and proven experience working with senior leaders and all relevant internal and external constituencies. A doctorate with at least five years of relevant experience is required. The Associate Provost will be a member of the faculty and eligible for consideration for a tenured appointment in the appropriate school/college.
