Job Responsibilities - you knew they were coming!
- Provide direct emotional and spiritual support.
- Counsel patients/families as needed while keeping in line with their beliefs.
- Work with staff, clergy and community groups to enhance their sensitivity and educate on the spiritual concerns of patients/families experiencing terminal illness and loss.
- Participate in IDG conference by exploring and assessing the potential spiritual needs of patients/families and reporting on services as provided.
- Provide bereavement follow-up services as assigned.
- Maintain proper records of visits to patients/families.
- Make contact with clergy or appropriate representatives of patients/families as indicated.
- Perform occasional liturgical assignments, such as memorial services with staff or community events.
- Conduct or make arrangements for funeral or memorial service when indicated.
- Develop and maintain a resource group of clergies to whom specific aspects of spiritual care may be delegated.
- Arrange for on-call availability of spiritual services.
- Provide educational programs for community clergy, religious and lay representatives as resources allow.
- Guide and educate family members and caregivers as needed.
- Observe, note, and report on progress of long and short-term treatment goals.
Skills and Qualifications - we know you have them!
- Graduate of an accredited seminary or school of theology or appropriate certification in hospital or pastoral ministry.
- Minimum 2 years of experience as a chaplain/spiritual counselor, preferred; active patient contact within the past three years, preferred.
- Ability to respond appropriately to a crisis outside of a hospital setting.
- Accept and adapt to different social, racial, cultural and religious modes other than your own.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills among different types of personalities.
- Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgement.
- Valid driver's license, clean driving record and reliable automobile; proof of current automobile insurance.
- Criminal background check clearance/fingerprint clearance.
- Negative TB test required.
- Current CPR certification.
Physical Requirements - to support others!
Requires considerable physical effort most of the day including kneeling, squatting, reaching, twisting, climbing, walking, exposure to temperature and humidity changes and maximal assist in lifting and/or transferring of a 100-pound patient. Must possess sight/hearing senses or use appropriate adaptive devices that will enable senses to function at a level required to meet essential duties of this position.
Mental Requirements - you went to school for this!
Must be able to work independently, make judgments based on assessment of situations and act accordingly. Must be flexible, innovative and possess good interpersonal skills. Must be able to cope with mental and emotional stress and demonstrate emotional stability.
Working Environment - there will be snacks!
Works indoors in agency office and patient homes/care facilities; travel to and from patients is required. Must be able to tolerate exposure to elements, including, but not limited to the following: odors, blood, body fluids and excrements, adverse environmental conditions and hazardous materials.
