This position is responsible for supporting capital and special projects/programs that occur within Nicor Gas related to Corrosion Control and Design. This position will ensure adequate and consistent corrosion control designs (CP, AC/DC Interference, Coatings, etc.) are developed and implemented during all phases of new and existing projects.Job Responsibilities & AccountabilitiesFunctional Expertise:Responsible to perform AC/DC interference monitoring and develop sound, technical solutions for remediationResponsible for designing new Cathodic Protection (CP) systems in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and proceduresResponsible for complex CP troubleshooting activities and generation of appropriate maintenance and remediation ordersResponsible for review of corrosion control designs for new construction or other / special projectsEnsures projects are designed and installed according to plans, specifications, procedures, and regulationsReview and evaluate new corrosion control technology for use. Assist with development of corresponding proceduresResponsible for monitoring new CP installation projects to ensure successful completion in accordance with plans and proceduresResponsible for timely cathodic protection troubleshooting (i.e. low systems, shorted conditions)Responsible for timely creation of remediation work orders (i.e. install anodes, clear short, install insulator, repair / replace test station). Follows through with necessary departments to ensure timely completionBusiness Acumen:Monitors corrosion control records to ensure complianceEvaluates corrosion control processes and procedures; suggests modifications and updates to improve efficiency, clarity, and understandingProvides sound, technical guidance to Corrosion Technicians to address complex CP issuesEngagement:Provide technical support for pipeline replacement projects and prioritizationProvides technical support for cathodic protection replacement, enhancement, or remediation projectsDriving Results:Generates reports as neededAssists with implementation of accelerated actions (DIMP) & additional preventive and mitigative measures (TIMP)Reviews and analyzes Cathodic Protection, leak history, and other pertinent data to identify trends and develop appropriate remedial measuresTroubleshoots complex corrosion control and cathodic protection issues; works with others to resolveEnter compliance records accurately into the appropriate system of record in a timely fashionParticipates as needed in regulatory audits to ensure successQualificationsEducation, Certifications/Licenses:Required:Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institutionNACE Certified Cathodic Protection Technologist CP3Valid drivers licensePreferred:NACE Certified Cathodic Protection Specialist CP4NACE Coating Inspector - Level 1 or higherProfessional Engineering License, Project Management ProfessionalRelated Work Experience:Required:4 years’ work experience in pipeline cathodic protection and corrosion controlSpecific Skills & Knowledge:Required:MS Office – intermediate proficiencyCAD/GIS - basic proficiencyAttention to detail and strong analytical skillsAbility to read, interpret, and implement codes, standards, and proceduresAbility to identify process improvements and work with others to develop appropriate processes and proceduresKnowledge of electrical principles – intermediate proficiencyAdvanced cathodic protection system design and maintenanceAdvanced cathodic protection system troubleshootingPreferred:Cathodic Protection Data Manager (CPDM) proficiencyGeographic Information System (GIS) proficiencyWorking Conditions/Physical Requirements:Travel:Frequent local travel with occasional (5 – 20%) overnight travel.Must possess a valid driver’s licensePhysical Demands:This position occasionally requires prolonged standing or walking.This position occasionally requires the incumbent to reach above shoulder level.This position occasionally requires the incumbent to bend, kneel, crouch, or crawl.This position requires the ability to lift up to 25 pounds.Work Environment:The incumbent works in an office environment.The incumbent may work near or with moving mechanical parts.The incumbent may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, or chemicals.The incumbent may be exposed to varying outdoor weather conditions.The incumbent may be exposed to excessive noise.Disclaimer: This information describes the general nature and level of work performed by employees in this job.
