Comp: $Fixed Hourly + Non-Exempt (Eligibility for overtime) + Cash Bonuses

Job Description:

We are seeking and experienced Marine Electrical Engineer for a 100-year-old marine electrical engineering company who will be actively involved in projects related to upgrading and developing new electrical systems for marine vessels and floating structures, such as ships, yachts, barges, and tugs. The incumbent will serve as the Engineer of Record (EoR), by taking responsibility for all assigned projects from the RFP stage to the final install, testing and compliance stages. The role requires the ability to deliver projects that meet all quality standards and are up to par with client specifications.


Projects undertaken will include a wide range of electrical projects including vessel shore power work, alternative marine power, mobile crane electrical supply, hydraulic systems, communication systems, terminal wide power systems, gate systems, and other floating electrical projects. The projects tend to be on demand and onsite on the vessels both port side as well as in deep water.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as Engineer of Record (EoR) / Lead Electrician based on their experience on all assigned mid to large sized marine electrical and electronic projects.
  • Respond to RFPs on new project builds and work with a team of experienced engineers and electricians as well as other areas of expertise to plan, design, and oversee ship modifications.
  • Create documents and one-line diagrams to explain and summarize technical issues, ship capabilities, change history, and other projects requested by the customer.
  • Performs power system studies and analysis such as load flow, short circuit, breaker and relay coordination and arc flash, lighting and alarm systems, electrical propulsion and power electronic systems and produces associated written reports.
  • Designs and specifies components for communication systems, control systems, electrical distribution, and utilization systems.
  • Prepare electrical drawings such as one-line diagrams, grounding and lighting plans, grounding, electrical installation details, schematics, and wiring diagrams as well as electrical lists such as equipment lists, load lists and cable schedules.
  • Work directly with other engineers and design drafters to produce engineering design documents and diagrams.
  • Review and adjudicate system design specifications and deliverables, test requirements, Departures from Specification, Request for Waiver, and Engineering changes and develop technical and labor cost estimates.
  • Develop engineering calculations, material/parts specifications, engineering reports, feasibility studies and shipboard surveys.
  • Hands-on build and implement all electrical systems projects assigned.
  • Test and evaluate the effect of new or modified electrical subsystems on overall system performance.
  • Review work done by others, and provide technical expertise and mentorship to other engineers, electricians, and supervisors via knowledge transfer and training to develop a strong pool of engineering resources.
  • Ensure design compliance with all specifications and requirements documents.
  • Upgrade technical knowledge continuously and stay current on electrical codes and technologies.
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed.


Required qualifications and skills:

  • Over 6 years of experience in working on marine electrical projects onboard floating vessels such as tugs, barges, yachts, and oceangoing, offshore support, patrol, and research vessels.
  • Strong technical knowledge of electrical circuits, generator systems, automation, and marine mechanical systems
  • Ability to maintain excellent understanding of electrical designs and line diagrams pertinent to assigned electrical projects required.
  • Strong knowledge of mid-sized and large yacht/ship electrical systems including electrical distribution system design and development, arrangements, component selection, tradeoff, electrical load and ArcFlash hazard analysis, coordination studies, and design integration.
  • Experience with hybrid power systems, automation experience and PLC knowledge is a plus
  • Knowledge of Grounded and Ungrounded Electrical Systems, Power Distribution and Lighting Systems and medium voltage distribution systems required.
  • Good leadership skills and ability to give strong attention to details required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be able to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently and resolve electrical problems with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and EPlan would be preferred.
  • Ability to work well under tight schedules.
  • Ability to travel to other ports as well as on board some client vessels required.


Education & Certifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related field preferred but not required.
  • Professional Engineer License strongly preferred.
