NRDC is seeking a Senior Director of Membership Marketing & Mid-level Giving to work with the Membership team in our New York office.
Position Summary
The Senior Director of Membership Marketing and Mid-Level Giving will assist the Managing Director of Membership & Planned Giving to develop and implement marketing strategies to raise a minimum of $40 million, with ambitions to grow, in unrestricted revenue via offline channels. The Senior Director of Membership Marketing will help design and implement NRDC’s membership growth and retention strategy via offline channels. They will work directly with the Managing Director and the direct marketing agency to create budgets, analyze key performance metrics, and develop growth and engagement strategies. The Senior Director is responsible for overseeing NRDC’s Mid-level giving program -- donors who give between $500 and over $25,000 annually, as well as managing the day-to-day operations of the membership services department. This position reports to the Managing Director of Membership and Planned Giving.
The ideal candidate will have the acumen and finesse to handle complex situations and multiple responsibilities simultaneously, mixing long-term projects with the urgency of immediate demands. He/she/they must possess exceptional judgment and communication skills and must exhibit the skills to collaborate with and achieve actionable results through others, the ability to build strong and sustainable relationships, and the capability to interact within all levels of the organization and with external constituents.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the daily operation and function and provide strategic leadership to the Membership team in Development including Membership services and the Mid-Level giving program which raises over $30 million annually for the organization.
- Working with the Managing Director of Membership & Planned Giving, onboard newly hired direct marketing agency to develop marketing and communications strategies to maximize growth and return on investment for the Membership program.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders across the Development department to implement and develop moves management metrics and reporting for Membership Gift officers.
- Work with key teams within the organization including Workplace Strategies, Finance and Donor Systems to ensure the optimum functionality of the Membership team.
- Manage three direct reports: the Manager, Mid-level Giving, the Associate Director of Membership, and the Membership Administrative Coordinator.
- Represent NRDC at marketing conferences or with external marketing stakeholders if needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required
- 7+ years experience in direct response marketing, preferably in the non-profit sector.
- Keen understanding of key performance indicators for successful direct response marketing and engagement, preferably in the non-profit sector.
- 5+ years of demonstrated managerial experience
- Experience with overseeing the performance of a mid-level giving program, ensuring strategic soliciting and stewarding of mid-level donors as well as collaborating across Development to ensure the cultivation of donors from the mid-level to major giving pipeline
- Results driven leader with proven track record of driving success
- Ability to lead, train, motivate and nurture talent
- Demonstrated knowledge of best practices and leadership in fundraising, acquisition, retention of high value supporters
- Organization, follow-up and multi-tasking skills with the ability to solve problems independently
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with individuals and teams at all levels, both internally and externally
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering and maintaining an environment of diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
- Knowledge of and proficiency in Excel, Database systems such as Salesforce or Blackbaud products, and the MS Office suite
- Experience in the fundraising system of Moves Management
- Excellent writing skills
- Strong EQ with an orientation toward service-centered leadership
- Maintains a work life/balance and has a good sense of humor
- Strong interest in the mission of the Natural Resources and Defense Council
- Some travel may be required

We offer competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and a supportive working environment. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with skills and experience. Internal equity will be reviewed and considered to determine a final offer. For this position, the salary range is $170,500 to $188,000.
Our offices are open and we are operating in a hybrid model. We offer NRDCers flexibility, and we ask them to come into the office and spend meaningful time there in collaboration with their colleagues. We call this purposeful presence.
