Mechanical Engineer – Robotic Systems

At Silana , we are revolutionizing the fashion industry by automating fabric handling and sewing processes through innovative robotic cells and custom mechanical subsystems. We are looking for a passionate Mechanical Engineer to join our team and contribute to the design, prototyping, and development of robotic systems that manipulate fabrics for automated garment assembly.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and prototype mechanical subsystems for robotic cells that grip and manipulate textiles.
  • Develop and iterate on end-effectors and grippers for picking up and handling various fabric types.
  • Investigate and implement features to simplify the construction, installation, and maintenance of robotic systems.
  • Conduct tests and experiments to validate mechanical design concepts, ensuring optimal performance and reliability of the robotic cells.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate mechanical subsystems with robotic and control systems.
  • For senior engineers: Mentor junior engineers and guide the team towards high-volume production as we scale our product offerings.

Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years of experience in mechanical design and development, ideally in robotics, automation, or textile manipulation systems.
  • Strong proficiency in 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, Fusion360, or equivalent.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping, including 3D printing and CNC machining.
  • Familiarity with basic hand tools and fabrication techniques, as well as motion components like stepper motors, linear actuators, and servo systems.
  • Knowledge of fabric handling and tensioning mechanisms is a plus.
  • Senior-level candidates should also have:
  • Experience transitioning products from small-scale prototypes to high-volume manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in project management, including task prioritization, risk management, and adapting to evolving requirements.
  • Experience collaborating with third-party vendors, fabricators, and manufacturers.
  • Familiarity with Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) principles.
