Role Summary

As a member of the Enterprise Data Science Team, the Principal Data Scientist is a subject matter expert in translating business strategy into advanced analytical models and experiments to optimize Alaska Airlines’ performance across various operations.

Key Duties

  1. Acts as a data and business information subject matter expert in the development of requirements and solutions for leadership, strategy, and operational data.
  2. Translates strategy into advanced analytical experiments to align performance with the company's strategic goals.
  3. Develops and deploys machine learning models to drive business decisions and create value for Alaska Airlines.
  4. Exercises considerable latitude and initiative to solve for continuous improvement processes through data-driven analysis.
  5. Advocates for and understands the full data lifecycle, including data collection, data mining, and results visualization.
  6. Investigates and combines new and disparate large-scale data sources to extend the data-driven business process.
  7. Develops and implements systems and technology to produce decision support tools.
  8. Mentors and supports the development of other analysts throughout the company.
  9. Closely partners with Product Management teams to align on development and deployment of AI/ML modeling.
  10. Oversees advanced research and analytic projects and presents findings to senior leadership.
  11. Continuously monitor and enhance model performance.

Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills

Required

  1. 7 years of experience in data science, operations research, or related area.
  2. Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or an additional 2 years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree.
  3. Strong experience in data mining, cleaning, manipulation, and preparation.
  4. Comfortable in Python, with 1+ year experience working with Pandas, Numpy, and ML toolkits.
  5. Experience managing program packages and repositories.
  6. Advanced skills in SQL.
  7. Demonstrated expertise in visualization techniques.
  8. Strong knowledge of descriptive and diagnostic statistics.
  9. Modeling proficiency in unsupervised and supervised machine learning.
  10. Demonstrated experience directing and leading team projects.
  11. Adept at communications and presentations to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  12. Data-driven mindset and a proven history of continuous self-development.
  13. High school diploma or equivalent.
  14. Minimum age of 18.
  15. Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred

  1. Ph.D. degree in a quantitative field.
  2. Proficiency working with Azure cloud environment.
  3. Experience in commercial aviation or other complex logistics.

Salary Range

$136,100 - $204,100 / year
