About The Role

As a Senior Engineer at United Utility’s W.A. Chester LLC, you will play a pivotal role in driving our mission to enhance the resilience and efficiency of the nation's power infrastructure. W.A. Chester is the nationally recognized premier provider of new installations, up-grades and repairs to underground high voltage transmission systems, with much of the work utilizing pipe cable technology. Work in this field is unique and offers a different set of challenges on each job. You will learn something new every day and become an important go-to contact for our clients and third-party engineering firms to assist them in planning and successfully executing their projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with our existing engineering team members and field forces to learn the technology of this field, the special equipment required, and the means and methods employed to successfully execute the work.
  • Apply what you have learned to detail the means and methods needed for each unique project. This includes taking “concept drawings” to the next level of detailing installation plans that match the realities of construction constraints and maximize the safety and efficiency of the installation effort.
  • Collaborate with internal Project Managers to assist with procurement, selection of construction tools and equipment that match the work.
  • Work with Chester fabricators and mechanics to repair/modify equipment and build new special purpose equipment.
  • Collaborate with system and component suppliers to help them understand what we need and avoid costly errors.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior team members.
  • Take every opportunity to contribute to the development of a corporate culture at all levels that emphasizes high quality work, a can-do attitude and going the extra mile to complete the mission safely and on time.

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in the electric utility industry.
  • Proficiency using engineering and graphics software.
  • Strong “technical savvy” – that is the ability to grasp the physics behind systems and equipment that are new to you.
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities.
  • Commitment to safety and adherence to industry best practices.

Key Nice-To-Haves

  • Professional Engineering (PE) license.
  • Hands-on experience with hydraulic systems, mechanical equipment, construction work, DIY enthusiast.
  • Computer system integration experience.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for extended periods, talk, or hear, and perform fine motor, hand, and finger skills in the use of a keyboard, telephone, or writing. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and reach with arms.

This job is based in Charles Town, West Virginia. Visits to Chester’s projects commonly in urban locations all over the United States will be expected. Out of town visits would normally be for a week or less, totaling 25 to 50% of your time.
