Senior Network Engineer, Dallas

Sixth Street’s Infrastructure Engineering team is looking for a talented Senior Network Engineer interested in growing their career in a small, fast-moving technical team with big goals. The successful candidate will need to be comfortable leading on multiple fronts at a time: building our physical office network infrastructure, scaling our network monitoring capabilities worldwide, troubleshooting network issues on our various endpoints and working with vendors and key stakeholders to keep our network costs under control. Candidates for this role are required to be highly organized, communicative and confident in their context switching capabilities.
We value the ability to focus and deeply engage on network-related topics. Being a thought leader and playing an architect-level role on network questions will be expected while also operating our physical network on a day-to-day basis. When things get challenging, a successful Senior Network Engineer at Sixth Street will collaborate with the entire Infrastructure and Cybersecurity teams and will display leadership with all individual contributors involved in Sixth Street’s network components and software dependencies.
This is a full-time role based in one of Sixth Street’s offices in the United States. The Senior Network Engineer role is part of the Infrastructure Engineering Team at Sixth Street, which is a nimble team that focuses on four practices to leverage technology in modern and scalable ways: Service Desk, Platform, Office Buildouts and Workplace Technology. In this role you will also have opportunities to work closely with in-house technologists on software development teams, collaborate with your peers on the Infrastructure team, interact with external vendors as well as end users. You will be expected to contribute to Sixth Street Engineering’s long-term technology vision that drives our infrastructure.
This is a full-time in office (hybrid) role based in our Dallas, Houston or Austin offices. This role may require traveling to our headquarters and global offices.
Core Responsibilities
- Demonstrates varied network infrastructure experience . At Sixth Street, we don’t just talk about our infrastructure. We strive to have folks who will bring in a vast amount of experience which will let them get deeply involved in the architecture, implementation and operations of our networks. Ideal candidates come with their specialties but enjoy venturing out of their comfort zones.
- Is accountable for our physical office networks. Sixth Street has deployed independent, Cisco Meraki-based physical networks in its various offices all over the world. These mission critical networks require constant management, performance monitoring, patching and timely responses when issues are reported. Our offices are where the magic happens: downtime affecting our investment teams is never an option and we constantly aim for 100% uptime.
- Virtual Private Networks and Zero Trust. Sixth Street has deployed VPN solutions to allow its software developers and users to access private applications in our cloud environment. In collaboration with our Cybersecurity team, the Senior Network Engineer will be expected to assist with network-level troubleshooting when issues are reported, both on the physical network as well as on endpoints.
- Collaborates and interacts with all Engineering teams. Sixth Street Engineering team members document, build, share, train and collaborate to get things done. The Senior Network Engineer will be expected to build relationships across the entire Engineering organization and work closely with other teams to investigate, diagnose and resolve problems that may have a network implication. In several cases, you will need to demonstrate leadership capabilities by driving investigations from the beginning to the end and communicating outcomes to leadership.

Preferred
- Proven, expert-level experience with the Cisco Meraki ecosystem (firewalls, switches, access points, cloud-based control plane, SFPs, monitoring capabilities).
- Vendor management in the network space:
- Management of network cabling vendors involved in the buildout and upgrades of our offices.
- Management of internet circuits vendors in all Sixth Street offices, including deployment of new circuits, upgrades of existing ones and troubleshooting when required.
- Network service providers when required for installation and upgrade of the firm’s equipment.
- Familiarity with AWS networking (AWS virtual network appliance, VPCs, security groups, routing, direct connects, site-to-site VPNs).
- Strong knowledge of fundamental network concepts such as:
- Physical layer: Cabling, Ethernet, Wifi, Access Points, Switching.
- IP connectivity, routing, firewalling.
- DNS, both for internal and external networks.
- Transport level protocols, applications-level services.
- Network security concepts.
- Experienced at troubleshooting network-related issues and digging into the network and application stacks to identify root cause.
- Highly motivated, entrepreneurial, self-managed and team-oriented candidates with strong problem-solving skills.
- At least ten years of proven experience in Network Engineering. Relevant degree is preferred but not strictly required.
- Experienced at communicating tasks, status and risks to leadership and key stakeholders.
- Expert in the design and implementation of new physical networks based on clear requirements such as user count and SLAs.
- Passionate about expanding into modern topics such as public cloud networking, device configuration using Infrastructure-as-Code and config management tools, cost monitoring and control, identity management, change control and testing using CI/CD pipelines, virtual networking.
- Understanding of modern application architectures: Platform as a Service, SaaS, microservices as well as application architectures based on the REST API.
- Familiarity with the Linux ecosystem and toolset: Debian and/or Red Hat derivatives, networking tools, network subsystems and services such as NFS and Samba, fluency at leveraging the Linux command line interface and scripts for automation purposes.
- Familiarity with the Microsoft ecosystem and toolset: Windows operating system and related networking tools, Active Directory.
- Awareness of Workplace Technology functions such as physical/virtual desktops, central device management capabilities, end-user device monitoring.
- Hands-on experience with common IT management and communication tools like Jira and Confluence.
- Comfortable with remote work using tools such as Outlook, Zoom, Slack and Box.
- Possesses a strong sense of urgency and prioritization; ability to execute critical tasks quickly and efficiently with strong attention to details when required.
- Comfortable with keeping track of multiple parallel projects and keeping stakeholders informed of progress on a regular basis.
- Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
