Law Offices of Metin Serbest (Chicago, IL) seeks a Legal Assistant to assist the legal team with the firm’s immigration law, international investment and transaction law, and other cases. Specific duties include: Preparing affidavits or other documents, such as legal correspondence, and organizing and maintaining documents in paper or electronic filing system; preparing legal documents, including briefs, pleadings, appeals, wills, contracts, and closing statements; preparing for trial by performing tasks such as organizing exhibits; investigate facts and law of cases and search pertinent sources to determine causes of action and to prepare cases; meet with clients and other professionals to discuss details of the case; file pleadings with the court clerk; gather and analyze research data, such as statutes, decisions, and legal articles, codes, and documents; direct and coordinate law office activity, including delivery of subpoenas; call upon witnesses to testify at the hearing.
The position requires a Bachelor’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Law, Legal Studies, or a closely related field of study, plus 1 year of experience in the job offered, or as a Legal Secretary, or similar position in the legal field. The position requires special (language) skills (because our clients are from various countries, cultures, and backgrounds including Turkey and former USSR countries): English (Required); Turkish (Required); Russian (Required). The candidate must have a foreign language certificate (certificate confirming knowledge of a foreign language).
The position requires special skills or requirements: Technology Skills: Adobe Acrobat; document management system software; LexisNexis Total Search. Special Skills: reading comprehension; active listening; speaking; writing; critical thinking; active learning; complex problem solving; judgment and decision making. Knowledge Requirements: Law and Government; Computers and Electronics.
The position requires occasional travel for business purposes (out of state).
