The National Runaway Safeline (NRS) is a 501(c)(3) organization committed to helping runaway, homeless, and at-risk youth. We provide crisis intervention, information, and referrals to youth and their families 24/7, 365 days a year, through our hotline, live chat, text, email, and online forums. Based in Chicago, we serve communities nationwide. Our mission is to keep youth safe and prevent homelessness through compassionate support and critical resources.
Position Summary:
The HR Generalist will support the organization by managing a variety of human resources functions, including recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, benefits administration, and compliance. This role requires a detail-oriented individual who can foster strong relationships across the organization and ensure adherence to HR best practices. The HR Generalist will work closely with the Chief Administrative Officer to support the organizational goals of NRS.
Requirements
Recruitment and Onboarding:

  • Manage the full recruitment process, from job postings and candidate sourcing to interviews and hiring decisions.
  • Oversee onboarding and orientation for new hires, ensuring a seamless introduction to the organization and its culture.
  • Collaborate with department managers to assess staffing needs and manage recruitment timelines.
Employee Relations and Performance Management:
  • Serve as a point of contact for employee inquiries and provide timely responses, fostering a supportive and positive work environment.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of performance management processes, including conducting performance reviews and addressing employee concerns.
  • Provide guidance on HR policies, procedures, and conflict resolution.
Benefits and Compliance:
  • Administer employee benefits, including health, dental, and retirement plans, ensuring timely updates and communication to staff.
  • Ensure compliance with labor laws and organizational policies, conducting internal audits and maintaining accurate documentation.
  • Support efforts to maintain accurate employee records and update HR systems as needed.
Training and Development:
  • Identify training and professional development needs across the organization and work with managers to provide ongoing learning opportunities.
  • Conduct HR-related training for new hires, volunteers, and interns, focusing on key organizational policies and practices.
  • Facilitate required HR trainings as required by law (e.g. annual sexual harassment training).
Continuous Improvement:
  • Collaborate with the HR team on initiatives that support employee engagement, retention, and overall satisfaction.
  • Contribute to ongoing efforts to streamline HR processes and improve operational efficiency.
  • Participate in HR team meetings, providing insights and suggestions for enhancing HR services.
Advocacy and Public Relations:
  • Help promote NRS's brand and mission through internal communications and public-facing HR-related initiatives.
  • Support HR in cultivating an inclusive and supportive workplace culture aligned with NRS's core values.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in a generalist HR role, preferably in a nonprofit or social services environment.
  • Strong understanding of employment laws, HR best practices, and employee relations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships across diverse teams.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and HR software (Paylocity, ADP, etc.).
  • Commitment to NRS's mission of supporting at-risk youth and families in crisis.
Compensation:
  • Full-time salary: $50,000/year with a comprehensive benefits package.
