Cell Site Field Technician
Classification: Non-exempt
Location : Idaho (rural, mountainous regions)
Duration : 6 months, with extension
Pay: $30 - $35 p/h, W2
Reports To: Project Manager
Working Hours: Night shift, will work maintenance windows
Summary/Objective: Cell site/BTS Installation Technician will perform maintenance, installation and repair activities on OEM equipment and equipment from various manufacturers including Ericsson and Nokia. Will also work on circuit wiring, optical cable, associated -24V and -48V DC power, and ground cables. All work will be performed on customer cell sites and fully documented. Technicians will strictly adhere to safety standards. This role is well suited for BTS Technicians, Cell Site Technicians, or Telecom Field Technicians, with installation experience. This is a staff level position and requires a minimum of 3 - 5 years of telecom installation experience.
Hiring Manager Special Interest:
  • Technicians will provide field integration support (Ericsson OEM) in Railway Mobile Radio (RMR) for ongoing Nokia to Ericsson migration support.
  • Technicians must be able to perform the following tasks
  • Powering up BBU/SMU/Controller from PDU
  • Script loading and providing connectivity to backend Amdocs team
  • Alarm movement from Nokia to Ericsson, NEA Test
  • Call test/PSAP test just after sector cutover warm/cold
  • Any troubleshooting if needed while completing above task.
Essential Functions:
  • Install network elements in existing equipment rack
  • Perform physical installation including site survey, "rack and stack", cabling, fiber; some power and ground installation work may be required
  • Commission newly installed equipment, verify power-up, and support on-site integration, as needed by customer
  • Run new fiber and communication cabling as needed; use existing cable plant when appropriate
  • Install 25 pair and CAT 5e cables. RJ45/RJ48 connectors, optical fibers with connectors, perform port testing, labeling and dress all wiring, per corporate standards
  • Document work performed per customer standard requirements
Other Functions :
  • May perform optical network and other communications equipment testing
  • Complete all required tests in order to gain access to customer cell sites and facilities
  • Read and understand Scope of Work (SOW) and Memorandum of Procedure (MOP)
  • Complete all technical reading and study requirements to earn CO access
  • Must be familiar with and be able to comply with standard trouble-shooting protocols
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
  • Work will be performed in a cell site with a moderate background noise environment
  • Cell sites are in remote, mountainous areas; access may be a challenge
  • Must have own standard tools, per tool list; company will provide specialized tools
  • Extensive use of hand tools, wire cutters, pliers, screwdrivers, and specialized wiring tools; electronic tablet to track work tasks; some power tools may also be used
  • Adhere to all safety standards around low voltage and high voltage electric power
  • Extensive travel within market - road trips, long and short hotel stays are expected
Required Education/Experience and Competencies:
  • High School Diploma or GED is required
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record are required
  • Expert installation skills with cell site equipment, optical and other communications network equipment
  • Familiar with low-voltage electric and light gauge wiring used for telephony, data service, and signaling
  • Cable lacing and color code for 25 pr and 4 pr communication cables
  • Proficient with hand tools such as snips, pliers, wire cutters, wire strippers, screwdrivers, etc.
  • Familiar with cell site entry, safety and work procedures, switch layout, power, ground, and ancillary equipment operation, troubleshooting and problem resolution
  • Familiar with power tools such as battery-operated drills and electric soldering irons
  • High physical flexibility including bending, stooping, laying down, and climbing ladders to reach cross connects
  • Familiar with provisioning orders, wiring and troubleshooting process and procedures
  • Good English language comm skills; must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with other team members
  • Maintain a positive attitude and work as a contributing team player
  • Able to travel extensively and work daytime shifts and nighttime maintenance windows, as required
