Job Summary


The Communications Specialist plays a pivotal role in shaping the voice and strategic messaging for the Office of the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer (SAVC CFO) and its associated departments at UCSF. This dynamic position offers the opportunity to craft comprehensive communication strategies and collaborate with key stakeholders across the university to enhance financial transparency and understanding. With a focus on innovative information campaigns that span written, visual, digital, and electronic communications, the specialist will drive initiatives that foster informed decision-making and active partnerships within the financial community.

In this role, you will be instrumental in developing and executing a strategic communication framework that supports the SAVC CFO's Office, working closely with the Finance Administrative Team and communicators throughout UCSF. Your efforts will amplify the dialogue, collaboration, and action across the UCSF Finance community, strengthening its impact and outreach.

Reporting directly to the Operations Manager, the Communications Specialist will manage and refine ongoing communications and critically assess and introduce new initiatives tailored to the evolving needs of the Finance division. This role is perfect for a visionary communicator eager to make a significant impact on financial management practices at UCSF through a robust, consistent, and engaging information dissemination strategy.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $79,000 - $127,200 (Annual Rate).

Department Description


The UCSF Finance organization delivers full financial services and related systems for all UCSF faculty, staff and students, UCSF Foundation, all University departments (campus and UCSF Health) and any outside entities who have a business relationship with the University. Departments include Budget & Resource Management, the Controller's office, the FAS Finance Service Center, Risk Advisory & Insurance Services, and Supply Chain Management. Services provided include long-term financial planning for capital and operations, oversight of the annual budget process for the campus, management of Chancellor's resources for capital and operating budgets, Cash and debt management and strategy, maintenance of the UCSF chart of accounts and general ledger, post-award contracts and grants accounting, Payroll services, including timekeeping, employment verification, and support for UCPath, Financial reporting, including MyReports and financial statements, Costing policy guidance and F&A Cost Recovery rate development, Recharge rate development and monitoring, Financial planning, reporting, compliance and transaction services for FAS and other campus administrative units, Risk and insurance services, Travel safety planning, Strategic procurement, supplier development, Accounts payable, Travel and expense reimbursement, Logistics services including mail, package delivery, moving and installation, and storage.



Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Minimum 5 years of professional communications and/or finance experience in a large complex organization.
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Adobe Photoshop, Zoom, Drupal (or similar CMS), website analytics tracking (SiteImprove preferred)
  • Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic communications development for various audiences.
  • Knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively direct technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications.
  • Solid skills to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short-term strategic communications plans.
  • Knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to the target and/or broad general audiences.
  • Solid written, verbal, interpersonal communication, active listening, and political acumen skills.
  • Thorough skills to create clear, easy-to-navigate, informative, accurate, well-designed, and functional websites that provide web content consistent with the organization's message and in keeping with management directives and client objectives.
  • Thorough interpersonal communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Knowledge of the organization, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices, infrastructure, and a strong knowledge of current affairs, and issues in higher education and / or health sciences.
  • Thorough skills to develop and implement original ideas and correctly identify and effectively solve problems.
  • Knowledge of UCSF's protocols, policies, and channels regarding communication internally and externally
